I owned a 2014 FRS for a few years and loved it, but the engine was obviously never the shining factor. I never felt confident revving it out. It just felt rough, for lack of a better term. Honestly had me paranoid it would explode. Of course it never would have, but... anyways. I owned an ND2 Miata recently and that was buttery smooth when revving out. I'll definitely miss that.

Is the 2022 brz/GR86 any more refined in the engine department than gen 1? Thanks!

Huge difference so far from first gen and I haven’t cracked past 4K rpm.
Between 2-3rpm there is a yummy amount of tq. The gearing is perfect. Tq is definitely felt on this engine down low compared to last gen. 200 miles on odometer hope to crack 1000 change oil and explore the top end. !

So they have rolled over on the sports car concept, to fit American ideas about how a car should work. I am very pleased to have a 2019 myself. If things require some power, down 2 gears and 5 grand is where we start. The song she sings at 7 grand makes the whole experience a wonderful thing.

Lol, definitely not. Nice attempt to convince yourself you still have the better car though. It pulls much harder at ALL rpms. the power comes in early, doesn't dip in the middle, and continues pulling harder all the way to redline.

If things require some power, you can still go down two gears and get into higher RPMs, you just don't have to anymore.

Wrong. You CAN improve the low end without compromising the top end. The engine still pulls from 5-7.5k as willingly as the FA20, just with more power.

Look at the hp curve up top, same slope.

The new Gen is a better car in just about every single mechanical way. Only reason one would prefer the old would be things completely subjective to them like the looks. The new motor is proven to make 40-50 whp above the old Gen across the board which is massive. That’s equivalent to a turbo on low boost without losing any of an Na motors responsiveness.

Gen 1's Achille's heel was its engine. The engine is now one of the Gen 2's strengths. That's the difference. And no amount of envy is going to change that. The Gen 1 is still awesome. The Gen 2 is just much better and finally a gem without an *

You are wasting your breath. It is now a super car that rivals those in the $100,000 range. Anybody can drive it since they just have to push the pedal and those massive horses just push it past everything else on the road.
These are guys that get PAID to drive so they know!

The reality is that it is exactly the improvement that should be expected after 15 years have gone by since the original was designed.
The fact that every other car made has also improved over those years seems to escape the fanbois. If the 13 was slow compared to other cars in it's day the 22 is no better now. A year from now half the internet will be complaining about how bad it is compared to this that or the other thing.

What other normally aspirated, 2+2 or even just 2 seaters under 2800 lbs cars are coming with a dedicated rear wheel drive chassis? Because I'd be highly interested. Next MX5 is most likely electric or hybrid. Next Elise will be electric. Zs are too heavy and more GT cars. So this might be it. And they nailed it. Why that's a problem for some is beyond me. It's not like it's fast. A Pacifica minivan smoked me at the light and I don't even think she was paying attention. But it does hold a 2nd gear slide much better now and with ease. So sliding the car around is now even more fun. Awesome.

Different strokes for different folks. Some people are just not good enough to drive a slow car fast, and as such they will swear by a 300hp minimum. Anything below that and they will call it trash compared to this and compared to that. Being able to out drive a fast car on the track makes me feel way better than using raw power to beat people down the straights and between stop lights.
