E85 FlexFuel kit & tune. Do it.

Wait till you feel that "noticeable difference".

I'm starting to tinker with romraider in earnest. Just going to tune down to 92 to keep it from bouncing off of the knock sensor. :/

It is mostly going to be in the 2000-3000 range that is problematic. I think once VVT starts bringing in the exhaust cam earlier it helps lower cylinder pressures a bit, that and at higher RPM's the compression cycle is physically less time.

I'm a fish out of water with this ROM editing stuff. I think that, because of my background, I'm painfully aware of the difference between what I should know and what I don't.

There is a great deal of guesswork and hearsay upon which even the so-called professional tuners base their decisions. People are making careers out of reverse engineering closed-source code, and are nowhere near completing the picture. I'm not comfortable swimming in those waters. Not yet, at least.

The ECU is pretty good at compensating. Most DIY tuning solutions are easy to flash back to a previous revision. Even though I probably don't know anywhere near what I should for what I have messed with, I just yell "for science!!" at my computer monitor

Software!

Luckily at least there are people willing to help out. I don't edit much off the base tune for OFT myself, just dialing in some of the settings such as MAF scale. I think the scary part is that we typically know one or two effects of any given change, but no one can say what ALL the effects are.

It's the same as any other machine. Learn what you can from static analysis, but at some point you have to give it a little poke to see what it does. Then a bit larger poke, and so on.

People with access to the source code know all the effects.

Just bugs me that I often read here stories of the mysterious redundant tables which seem to have no effect. At least I haven't given up on the idea of editing the factory ROM. I can still become familiar with the differences between stock and Shiv's ROMs. Even before all of that, I need a beater ECU and to know how to swap them.

It's impossible to do any analysis unless you have more functions than variables. This feeds right into my discomfort with the mystery tables. ...if you get my drift.
