Lightweight 17s (RPF1s) w/ 215s sounds like the way to go. (or maybe w/ 245/40R17?... same diameter)

18s look nice, but clearly not the best for lap times. Let alone Portland's shitty streets.

Can't wait for Enkei to come out with their 17x9 +35 RPF1s in 5x100!

Interesting read. I'll look into stickier tires for next summer!

The wider tire is also going to increase aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance (especially with a sticky tire like the star spec).

I'm pretty sure the stock tires were installed as training wheels, with the understanding that they be replaced when the owner/driver is ready to push the car a little higher. (They also, no doubt, were installed to try to get acceptable mpg numbers for the car).

The larger diameter 18" rim will have it's weight farther from the hub that the same weight 17" rim so it's very likely the straight line performance was reduced as well as braking. It would be a very small amount but the margin as pretty small. So lighter wider 17's would give you more grip and if you can stay under or very close to the weight of the stock wheel tire combo you will see that wider is in fact better.

The problem I see with this is that they went 235/40/18 instead of 235/40/17. I bet the car would have been fastest on the 235/40/17's because it would actually slightly increase the gearing...

I'm running Enkei PF01 17x8 w 235/40 17 Star Specs. Compared to stock, diameter was ~1/4" less and weight was up ~ 4oz. See post #16 here:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7934
I ran 17x9 RPF1s with the same tire on my NC Miata, which probably gives slightly better turn in. Surely the magazine guys knew the 18s would be slower. Maybe that was just the size they could source for free/cheap. For me, the best news in the article was that the stock suspension help up to the extra grip, as I have not tracked my 86 yet. Then again, there's a reason the only car mag I read is GRM.

I think they knew that the 18s would be slower, but wanted a "surprising result inside". It isn't really a secret or a new discovery that if you keep adding big wheels, then you are going to hit a point where they slow you down. GRM did a similar article awhile back where they tested 15, 16, 17, and 18 with the same width rubber on a car. The 17" combo posted the best times.

so, do you sacrifice any MPG with stickieer tires ? i meant to say, with the same size-diameter -- im assuming the compound might not be as gas friendly as the prius tires...

just wondering...

but then there is also the issue of brakes. you can only fit a 13 inch rotor under a 17. with 18's you can do a 14inch.

for the most part, air rolls across and over the body. if the wheels are aligned and/or tucked in the wells, there should be no additional drag.

rolling resistance may increase with a higher UTQG (250-300+) but the difference in MPG would be negligible.

Why do you need bigger brakes?

That is entirely untrue and completely misses the difference between a 215/17 and a 235/18.

See below.
