I agree with one of the previous posters that this just sounds like people are looking to mod their car any way they can seemingly just for the purpose of modding and nothing more.

Makes little sense to me unless you test the car with the sound tube removed, hear a difference and then decide you prefer the sound without the tube.
Change simply for the sake of change seems like a waste. Not to mention, if I was buying this car second hand and knew anything about it, I would not want to see that tons of tampering has been done to the car. That would devaluate it to me.

If you plan to own it till it dies I guess that's different. And unlikely in most cases.

If for no other reason, less weight never hurts, and it cleans up the engine bay a bit as well.

This is interesting to me.. this mod is to reduce engine noise - but once some after market intakes come out that will no doubt make MORE engine noise people will be all over it. More engine noise is obviously not the MAIN reason for adding a CAI but it is a bonus to most people I think.

@GrimmSpeed - I added a link near the top of your DIY to another topic that deals with the plug to fill the hole left when you delete the noise generator. Hope that's OK with you.

Every little part added to the factory car costs big bucks. Sure, its maybe a dollar worth of parts to create the noise generator. But spread that over say 50,000 cars and it starts to ad up. My point is, Toyota must have thought of it as more than just a marketing gimmick to spend the extra cash. Just a thought. I'm going to leave mine alone for now.

That's what I thought as well.. Couldn't Toyota/Subaru have cut costs by eliminating this tube from their assembly line? ..OR, if they felt the need to pad the pricing of the car, they should've spent the money elsewhere.. like, perhaps, a usable armrest/storage bin option?

I'll keep mine too... that is until I add a significant power adder.

Why can't I just take off the hose clamp at the intake tube, stuff a rag tightly in, and replace the generator hose and clamp??

7. The only remaining pieces of the intake system are the intake tube and the noise generator. Loosen the hose clamps on the noise generator tube as well as the intake tube and recirculation tube.

What is the tube that is labeled "Release clamp" ? Is that the recirculation tube? What is its purpose?

It's the crankcase ventilation tube. It's for the vacuum in the motor. If it's removed and the engine is started it'll run like crap.
