I believe I read the Subaru article on (MotorTrend?) that it was tilt-telescoping steering (that was a Dec 2nd review after test driving Subaru following TMS). No brainer since the car is so small. I wish my Miata has that steering.

Well was there ever a 1U?

It seems plausible that 4U would be the code maybe having some reference to the 4AGE, but 4U obviously, instead?

Can you be more specific? There is no info about the engine on page 1, on page 2 OldSkoolToys mentioned the 2U flat engines Toyota made back in 1976 but Toyota skipped 1 whole gen by going from 2U to 4U.

2U is Toyota code name for twin flat engine (2 cylinders)
4U is flat 4 which is 4 cylinders.
The code numbers refer to number of cylinder.

That is not how Toyota names their engines the number stands for the gen of the engine not the cylinders, if that was the case I would have a 4ZZ-GE in my Celica and Supras would have 6JZ.....

Generation in this case is not synonymous with Chronological Time Order. Its more rather Generation = Type. Example of this is the GR V6 engine

2002 - 4.0 L (3955 cc) 1GR
2006 - 3.5 L (3456 cc) 2GR
2003 - 3.0 L (2994 cc) 3GR
2006 - 2.5 L (2499 cc) 4GR
2005 - 2.5 L (2497 cc) 5GR

the 4U would be the 3rd generation if you took it from a Chronological Perspective, but assigned Type 4 among the designs Which can hold other information. In regards to the GR it also corresponding with displacement information as well as type order.
