NA, 7800rpm rev limit, car gets tracked around 6 times a year, currently at 80K miles. I have noticed no need for a catch can. No oil loss, intake is pretty clean.

Sounds like you have an auto same as me. FI makes redline come up real quick. To be fair maybe only once a day in 4th. 2-3 all day though. Sometimes 1st but 2nd and 3rd gear pulls are more fun then 1st.

I had a Racer X catch can on my BRZ for about 4k miles. and when i opened the petcock i got maybe a few dribbles of oily slush. now my car is also a 15k mile 2017 so im not sure its fair vs most the users here, but I took it off ( for sale now too) since The ammount wasnt any concerning..
we are both Direct and port injected, which sort of keeps the valves clean vs say the ND miata which is only direct injected. |

Nothing really, you said redline in 3rd is like 90mph (which not sure what that has to do with this either) but AT redline in 3rd is just over 90mph, but at 7400rpm in a 2017+ MT it is 81mph, so it sounded like you had an AT based on that.

Redine is at 7400 And can’t be changed unless you get a new instrument cluster
Rev limiter is 7400 stock, but can be raised to w/e. Generally 7600 on stock block. Higher would explain why you have so much blowby though. Redline tach at 7400 will read 81mph actual speed 83mph w/ 255/40r17 Rev limiter 7600 will read 84mph actual speed 85mph w/ 255/40r17 Don’t care either, just Stock auto redline is 94mph (about 90mph) only reason I thought you might have an auto. |

I installed the Mishimoto catch can kit for the FRS/BRZ/86 and was surprised by how much oil it collects. Not much in the scheme of things but not insignificant. I'd rather catch it than let it go in the engine even though these cars have port injection which should keep the intake clean.
I will be buried with my 86 so the expense is worth it IMHO. |

In my case, I went for a dual Air-Oil Separator with drain back ( The Verus Engineering AOS), when started to notice oil consumption due to crank case pressure and incrase blowby resulting from FI and Built engine. I have to mention that the AOS/catch can is really one piece as part of the crank case ventilation system. So the key from my experience is to ensure the crank case is well ventilated. Catch cans/aos is to help getting « clean ventilation ». The trick for me was figuring out a system that would be reliable in a cold climate. I make a separate posting to discuss my findings of the last few months of R&D...
One of the best article I found is the one from Damond motor sport: https://damondmotorsports.com/blogs/...ye-bye-blow-by Last edited by falcon_wizard; 04-09-2020 at 05:03 AM. Reason: Added details |
