AEM Tuned Intake - Pics / Videos / Dynos - FT-86 SpeedFactory Review

Well, we are back with another one of our review threads.

Currently, we are working on the Scion FRS and Subaru BRZ AEM Tuned Intake.

Now, AEM has done something else no one has to this point. They offer an electronic module with the intake that "fixes" the MAF readout; essentially providing a tune with the intake. No need to worry about idle surges, or running lean as AEM has fixed all that with the electronic portion of this intake.

We have heard some people say, " it's ugly "; over in our SEMA thread, where we debuted this intake, but I have to add in here that AEM was one of the last to come out with an intake for the FRS/BRZ in 2012. The reason for that being, if I were to guess, is they wanted to engineer a quality product that provides actual HP/TQ gains. So if it's ugly and performs and your hood is closed 99% of the time, does it matter?

Want something that is "pretty", ARC offers that with their intake. They also offer the ability to suck hot engine air in, which doesn't matter when hard parking I suppose.

The intake has all the features it needs to possibly be one of the better options out there for our cars.
1. The air box once installed is fully sealed. - No hot air.*
2. It pulls cold air directly from the stock location - No hot air.*
3. Electronic Module to correct the MAF readings providing gains. = power ( Jeremy Clarkson voice )
* If you live in a desert, hot air is unavoidable. Just an FYI

With that being said we have a review video and photos below. We also have an explanation as to why we don't have a dyno or in car video yet. ( Think Iowa after a blizzard, no power for three days and etc... )

Photo time:

AEM Dyno Chart:

Installed ( From SEMA thread ):

Why no videos or dyno? Because Blizzard..... and parts of Des Moines, IA without power for three days. YIKES
oh Guess the car I am driving in which I took this photo. First person to get it right gets a goodie bag shipped to them.

Dyno / Install Video:
We will get our stock Firestorm FRS out of storage and on the dyno as soon as the roads don't resemble a minimum maintenance country road.

PART 2

Well everyone, we finally got some time to get our AEM intake installed on our Firestorm FRS today.

Nothing complicated about the install and everything went smoothly. AEM provides nice grommets and hardware to make sure everything has great fit and finish. They include a cap for the factory sound generator and rubber seals to ensure that the airbox is sealed up nicely! The fit and finish is what you come to expect from a company like AEM.

Our Firestorm FRS was our baseline for many of our test, so the mods were saved for the Argento car. Since we wanted to test this intake on a car with no other mods, it was only logical to install on the red one. Plus, it was getting jealous of all the goodies the silver car was getting!

The car feels great when you get into the revs! The engine really wants to breathe and this system gives it a rush of fresh air. When you start creeping up to that 5500rpm range, you can feel an increase in power. Right around when the shift light comes on in the video, you can hear the audible difference. In cabin noise is increased in a good way and driveability has not been affected so far. I have about 30 miles on the system with no issues and look forward to many more

That is all for now everyone. Our dyno partners are scheduled to have their dyno back up and running February 1st. So, expect those results in a few weeks, but for now we leave you with this.....

Cheers!
-Yo

Total plug and play. One end into the MAF, the other into the stock wiring harness. As easy as putting on a t-shirt.

Can this kit be used with the AVO turbo kit, as a high flow intake solution?

I would just use the AVO panel filter in that situation.

I'm sorry, but if you remove the snorkel (which IS a restriction), you're gonna suck in hot air. This airbox sucks air from the same spot as the airaid and my extensive temperature testing wasn't impressive on the airaid. I also am not buying that 10 horsepower difference without seeing an afr curve. I'm very hesitant with anything that "fixes" the maf sensor. Seems like they'd rather trick the maf than spend more time engineering the intake itself.

And stay safe out there man. Blizzards aren't fun. I've been lucky up here. No snow at all yet.
