BMW manuals are nothing like that. The shifter is rubbery as hell, imprecise, long throws and no feedback. The clutch is vague and totally unpredictable. This is partly by design (Clutch Delay Valve) and partly because they use a flimsy plastic pedal with a varying mechanical advantage over the master cylinder. On top of that the clutch travel is so large you have to lift your knee up to release it fully. BMW manuals are manual, but that is really the extent of it. They’re not really rewarding to operate.

This is coming from me as a long time BMW driver, I've gone through 4 manual BMWs and drive several friends' ones regularly.
I have a 228i manual. The clutch and shifter are set up for commuting, not for sporty driving. However, at an auto show I sat in an M2 manual and BMW does use different hardware in the M cars. The clutch had shorter stroke and the shifter had shorter throws.

Since ~2016 BMW added auto rev matching on downshift; which to me defeats the point of having a manual. The only way to disable the auto rev matching is to switch traction and stability to off.

Now I'm curious to know which manual transmission set up Z4s get.

As soon as I saw the guy standing there in his shorts, no socks and in his hands in the ever so proper, listen to me pose, I passed. I already knew everything I needed to know about his opinion.

Yea, I'm that judgmental at times.
