I also thought of the car as an instant classic. The look of it, the message behind the car, and the enjoyment of the vehicle will likely invoke a change in the sports car segment.

I just hope the 86 remains a niche market car and doesn't get mass produced to crazy numbers and becomes common. It'd be great if it could keep its rare/mystique factor.

only 60% of value? I hope not, even though I plan to keep this forever. My tc was $17k in 2008. 4 years later it was still worth $14k (theoretically/kbb) with the mileage and condition. That's ~80% of it's original value, 4 years later.

The success of this car could also inspire something 'better' from another automaker that renders the 86 less desireable than expected in a few years.
Doesn't bother me. If I have a light rwd option available from every automaker I'll be quite thrilled. Also, I didn't see this car as a financial investment (although it is an investment in my sanity). -Justin

It's way too soon to call this an "Instant Classic". Especially since the 2014 model can fix all of the 2013's models problems. Even the next model of FR-S/BRZ can be much more desirable then what we'll have for the next five or so years. (A BRZ without the silly mustache? xD) Something like the RX-7 can happen where the FC is half the price of an FD now.
Even other makes can make their own Lightweight RWD cars that can outclass the FR-S and become more desirable. The only real investment a car should be, is if you had bought an FR-S/BRZ at the start of the wave and sold it off now while there's a huge waiting list. |

It takes time to become a classic. My old TVR Griffith 430 is now considered a classic but it was/is a 1992 car.

I think in Australia it is pretty much at 'instant classic' stage... or very close to it

I'm going to enjoy this car as much as I can. I was in diapers during the original success of the AE86, I sure as hell ain't missing it this time around.

If the financial geniuses couldn't predict that lending hundreds of thousands of dollars to people with no way to pay any of it back was eventually going to crash the economy, I don't have much faith in them predicting the resale value of a car that's been available for a matter of weeks.

I predict the value of your car will never surpass what you paid for it.
At least not while you're alive enough to care. |
