Give me $100k to buy a sports car and I wouldn’t even consider the 86. Give me $50K and it’s in the running and likely would win.

With the $100K cut off there would only be one!

Personally I find it refreshing that he's not some coked-up screamer waving his hands all around, which seems more and more to be the norm these days.

I also found his take on the car given he's a CTR owner interesting, as I'd been considering the new gen version (which seems unlikely to be substantially different).

That's about where I am now too. I put a web reservation/deposit in last winter for the new Z, but the decidedly mixed reviews together with the $70K CAD OTD price for the version that actually has a LSD have led me to cancel it.

I would have done a base 992 before it creeped over $100k, so now I would do a Cayman GTS 4.0 or the Lotus Emira. The 86+mods (Built motor, CD009, Harrop SC, Etc) is actually probably next in line over a manual Supra or M2. Maybe even a ND RF Miata with a LS3 swap over the BMWs too.

About a month ago I stopped by the Nissan dealer near work just to see if they knew when the new Z would be coming in so I could check it out (not buying just curious).

You can imagine my surprise when the sales guy's response was "There is a new Z coming out?"

Plus the base Miata doesn't have an LSD, so you would basically HAVE to pay more just for the car to be equally equipped on paper. The Miata is a better car in some ways, but ultimately more expensive for a less useable vehicle, and one that probably needs to be modified more out of the box if you want to do any sort of competitive driving.

Outside of that, there just plain isn't anything close when it comes to price. Camaro, Supra, Z, all 10k+ more expensive. Are they ten thousand dollars more car than in 86? For my tastes I'm not so sure. Cayman is your next best bet, but is it worth twice the price starting? Again I'm not so sure. Not mention Porsche options make it a 70k+ car reeeal quick.

Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, the twins are the best car out there IMO.
Didn’t watch the video but these are my thoughts exactly on the twins. There’s literally no other sports car I’m interested in between it and a 911 GT3

He didn't have a clue! He sent me to talk to the Sales Manager. I told him I wasn't that curious and just left.
In fairness it was the small town dealer in Woodstock so probably never sold a Z of any year.

Of their current stock of 10 new vehicles 5 are pickups, 3 are SUVs and 2 are Sentras so....

In the eight months I had that reservation (which I had assigned to a preferred dealer) I had not ONE communication from them about status, delivery, pricing, despite the car being months beyond its initial promised delivery window.

that's quite normal actually. sales staff don't worry about selling what doesn't exist on their lot, or in que to to show up to the lot.

just before the hellcat released, my brother was in the process of changing dealerships for service. he said he saw both dealers react the same way-- guy's coming in 8-12 months before there was even an official build start date for the vehicle, looking to drop $10-40k to "get on the list" for a car there was no official dealer communication for.

in both cases, that was how the dealers knew the vehicle was going to happen, there was no official acknowledgement in even an email to the big-shot dealership owner from dodge that the vehicle existed until allocations opened up 3 months before production.

A lot of this thread is confirming "fanboi status."

Is the new gen a great car? Absolutely. Have I already spent thousands and will spend thousands more to make it what I want? Absolutely. I just spent $2200 for PPF, ceramic coating, and window tint. Already have a custom built coilover setup here, GR ducktail, OEM Audio+ front 6 speakers. I've only had the car 2 weeks.

But let's not act like it's a Lotus Elise or something.

if you gave me $100k for a car, i'd buy a mitsubishi mirage. in that passion purple color.

then i'd take the rest and mod my other 2 vehicles well past any reasonable length.
