so we got it in last. loosening the engine mounts helped quite a bit. bit of a learning experience but im happy thats its on. i still couldnt get the trans to mount flush with the motor but once it hit the dowels i knew i was in there and used the bell housing bolts to pull it in the rest of the way. thanks everyone that helped me out. this forum is full of some awesome ppl. thanks!!

I know this is an old thread but I was having similar issues to OP. I did not have to loosen the motor mounts (Stock motor mounts). The reason my trans was not seating back on was because the splines were misaligned preventing it to move forward. I rotated the input shafted and retried to seat the trans a couple times until in went in smoothly.

I was also only able to get the trans to the dowels at which point I used the bolts to seat the trans to the motor. I made sure to tighten the bolts only a few rotations on all sides going back and forth until it was seated to the motor (they screwed in easily without much force).
