I recognize that I had the privilege as a salaried person to take sick hours for both rounds. I have no dependents and I can afford financially to have an "off-day" should symptoms arise. There are also racial correlations to poverty and broadband access. Many doctors offices have moved toward video visits. Now if you have a job without benefits and already are paycheck to paycheck, it can very difficult to get a vaccine appointment scheduled. There are those that don't want the vaccine for various reasons, but there are those that want but simply have not because of barriers. See article for that perspective: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features...not-hesitancy/

I have two answers that are of differing ends of the argument. At one end I am suggesting that humans are special* given their progress and achievements. At the other end I am suggesting human's specialness is only significant to themselves: the universe is totally indifferent to their position. *Some people say humans are clever, look what we've done but I'm suggesting there is only a handful of clever people and the rest of us have benefited from these clever people's ability to manipulate the world.

Would you please elaborate on that? I have no idea what the issue is.

UK is now suffering a 'pingdemic'.. The Covid app pinging anyone who may have come across someone infected!! This has impacted services such as buses, trains and supermarkets, due to an unusually large number staff getting pinged and having to self isolate!!
Crazy times!!! |

We are so close to under control here with under 200 cases daily for Ontario the last few weeks. But, with malls open now and hair salons, nails etc and sit down dining we must keep vigilant if things start to accelerate again. For sure the majority of hospitalizations will be among unvaccinated. Keep yourselves and your families safe and people that make bad decisions can deal with the consequences hopefully without dragging others with them.

https://www.kff.org/policy-watch/rac...ation-efforts/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5824643/ The graph is more of a reflection of income, education and access to the vaccines. Many minorities like blacks do express distrust of the government more than whites, for instance, but for different reasons that are tied to historic mistrust versus conspiracy theories or party affiliation. I don’t think the data is misleading. It is good information to know, but it requires nuance in understanding what are the driving factors. In many ways, the driving factors here are likely similar driving factors that contribute to the gap we see along party lines like education: There is a political gap.

It was an unfortunate reminder of the pandemic effects while surfing through the Olympics opening ceremony last night. A nearly empty stadium, nations with some of their best talent missing, and at the center, the controversy in Japan about holding the games at all while Tokyo is in a state of emergency.
It's so controversial in Japan that the title sponsor, Toyota, pulled all of their new ads made to air during the games and CEO Akio Toyoda cancelled his scheduled opening night appearance. I tried watching a little more this morning but can't take the lightweight main commentators who know next to nothing about the sports they're calling. Fortunately, they have color commentators but the few I've seen are using technical terms not understandable to those unfamiliar with more obscure sports. It's early, but this may become the most boring, lowest rated Olympics ever. |

I think they should return to the spirit of the original Olympics and compete naked.

Moving the white community to get 10% of its remaining unvaccinated vaccinated moves us much closer to herd immunity than does 10% of the remaining Black (or any other ethnicity). Putting it another way, if 100% of the all communities other than white, non Hispanic were vaccinated that would still leave us at about 30% of the population not being vaccinated, assuming the White community did not vaccinate one other person. In the end, the "fix" for this has nothing to do with race and everything to do with "everyone". To my mind, as long as we continue to concern ourselves with a breakdown by race for anything, we will not be able to get past racism. If we want to be one people we need to act as one people in a time of crisis.
