Luxury is a combination of badge, creature comforts and price point.

The higher the price point, the more "luxurious" it should be because it starts catering to a crowd that can afford the higher price tag. And the more you pay, the more you expect.

Creature comforts and tech is kind of a wash since almost every car has the same tech in it, just various degrees of functionality. The higher end brands tend to have more of a "cool" factor to it though (which can get to the point of needlessly excessive and complicated), where the lower end brands would probably stick with something a bit more basic and straightforward.

Then theres the badge, and this varies based on the badge and the badge's reputation.

an 80,000 toyota land cruiser is not a luxury car.
But an 80,000 Toyota Crown probably is. (if you ever been to Japan, that's a japan exclusive midsize RWD executive class car that is in line with a BMW 5 series or Lexus GS)
Compared to Lexus or BMW? Those are expected to give you a certain degree of Lux, based on their reputations.

With BMW and Merc and abunch of other brands going "downmarket" with their smallest/cheapest models, it feels like a brand dilutition. BMW 2 series gran coupe? Thing looks like a fancy corolla now. Theres even a 2 series Grand tourer which is basically a 2 series mini minivan in Europe (think Mazda5). They can still pump out the lux cars but they also now have cheap mainstream cars with their badges on it.

With that said, i dont think a Supra is really a luxury car. Its built to a BMW standard and uses BMW parts so theres some degree of BMWness to itt. But in the end, if i get in say a lexus RC and then drive a Supra afterwards, im sure i'd feel much more "coddled" in the RC than the Supra.

Same here, I sat inside of one at my local Toyota stealership while waiting to pick up parts and it just screams meh in both design and material. It wasn't bad by any means, but at the same time there wasn't anything special about it. Information aside the RC is the clear winner in my book.

And quality. There are plenty of cheaper cars with low rent leather seats and lots of gadgets in them, but the quality is usually lacking.

A brand badge is not enough these days since, as you say further down, BMW, Merc and Audi have been in a rush to dilute their brand cachet by producing cut price cars that compete with mainstream brands at the more affordable end of the market.

It definitely is. If you've ever sat in a BMW 1 series, it is 'nice' but not premium, and certainly not luxury. A new Mazda 3 is just as nice and 'lux' inside. For the same reason, I'm baffled at people thinking the A90 Supra is a luxury car. It's totally not. The interior is closer to BMW 1 series quality than to 7/8 series. Nice, but far from prestige or luxury.

Of course its not. It's a high end Toyota sportscar with a BMW 1 series level of quality, nothing more, nothing less. Not a bad thing by any stretch, but its embarrassing to see people gushing over its luxury credentials as if it was a Bentley.

I honest to god do not think the Supra's interior is even that much more 'lux' than my Z. The door cards on the Supra for example are a huge, bland expanse of plastic, much like a 350Z. The faux carbon fibre plastic is OK but nothing like the kind of genuine CF/aluminium/wood grain trim you'd expect in a really premium car. Definitely not luxury.

I think if you compare any base BMW to a budget brand then you will see that it is premium. Similarly, the Supra is far from an 86 with a powerful powertrain. Someone compared it to a Bentley?

The Supra’s interior has real carbon fiber.

i was just trying to show cars in a similar price range, but since you guys wanted the 370z and 86 i added interior pics from the same source which doesn't flavor one over the other with better lighting or scenery.

The Supra's design looks like they are channeling a retro 2000 version of the car with a Tom-Tom GPS suctioned to the dash.

Have I mentioned I'm not a fan of the the iPad on top look?

I think most people share this sentiment, but there are limited options. If they move the screen down then people take their eyes off the road, and the interface becomes a distraction or a frustration to use as the driver toggles their vision back and forth. They can integrate it into the dash up high, but then the dash becomes big and bulky. The most clever solutions I have seen are when the screen rises from he dash or flips up, but that is on higher end cars and adds weight and complexity. The other solution is to centralize the display/nav to the gauge cluster like it is on Audi's and other cars.

Had the Supra not been developed at the height of this design trend then perhaps it wouldn't have looked like that.

Yea the Gen2 CTS-V has this, and there are kits to change it so an aftermarket display will fit in the space without having to have it rise up. I like that "solution".

If there is a concern about people looking down at it for NAV then a heads-up display fixes that.

EDIT: Wrong car, same idea.
