I saw on the PWC website that the 86 was a approved platform, but I didn't see anyone running one....until now.
A few years back they had a prototype supercharged FR-S in the higher class. TCA Class rules below: Bodywork Modifications Stock body panels may be lightened. Body panels must maintain stock profile, unless alternate panel is approved. Non-essential trim may be removed. Chassis Modifications Interior may be removed except dashboard. Miscellaneous unused mounting brackets may be removed. Chassis seams may be welded. Doors must be capable of being opened from inside and outside. Driver’s seat may be moved rearward as long as the seat back at the driver’s shoulders does not pass the vertical plane of the rear seat shelf. Windshield wipers may be removed, but an operational motor must remain in place. Safety Modifications A full rollcage must be used. The rollcages typically have eight main attachment points within the cockpit/trunk. The A-pillar, B-pillar and roof may be stitch-welded to the rollcage. Fuel cells are required, unless stock fuel tank is located between frame rails and the axles. The driver’s safety equipment includes a racing seat, six- or seven-point harness, full-face helmet, head/neck restraint, window net, right-side head restraint net, side-impact protection, driver leg support system, multi-layer suit, fire-resistant shoes, gloves and underwear and a three-zone fire system. Engine Modifications Engines may be blueprinted and balanced. Full-prep engines may replace reciprocating internals. Custom intake manifolds may be allowed if deemed necessary. Engine management systems are free. Ignition system component may be replaced. Must maintain an operational on-board starter. Drivetrain Modifications Transmission and differential coolers may be added. Limited-slip differentials are permitted. Suspension Modifications The OEM-type of suspension must be retained (i.e. McPherson strut, double A-arm, etc.) Alternate control arms may be submitted for approval. Shocks and springs are free, but must remain in stock location. Anti-sway bars are free. Steering geometry may be modified to correct bump steer. Brake System Modifications Brake pads, fluid, proportioning valves and lines are unrestricted. ABS may be removed or deactivated. Some vehicles may be permitted aftermarket calipers or rotors. Wheels Wheel offset is free, provided the approved bodywork covers the portion of the tire that contacts the track. Wheel diameter is 17″. The maximum wheel width is 8″. Tires Tires are Pirelli P Zero Racing Slicks, in width ranging from 245mm to 315mm. |

The 86 should do well until it gets hit with BoP penalties. I was at the Pirelli race at Road America in 2015 when Tony Rivera was racing his FR-S in TCA. He qualified 1st but he was actually too quick so they made him start from the back of the grid. He passed the whole TCA field and won by 10 s. In races after that they hit him with BoP penalties and he never won again. Sadly I lost interest in the whole series...

The 86 (pre-facelift) I saw in the race at Lime Rock didn't do really well there. It was always at the back of the pack of TCA/TCB cars, usually second to last, if not dead last. It was also one of the loudest cars on the course, despite not being as quick as the others. Still awesome to see it out there, just would like to see it more competitive and boxing with the other cars.

Didn't know that. I haven't followed PWC as close since they stop offering free online viewing of the races. |

They have freed up the allowed modifications in TCA since when Tony Rivera ran the FR-S. The TMG 86 is also well sorted and have been successful in European VLN endurance races. This is a one-off race for now but if they show potential maybe they will campaign the car as a Toyota supported entry next year.
The FR-S/BRZ has been pretty successful running in similar SCCA club racing classes the last couple of years. It is pretty normal for it to take several years for a car chassis to find its footing in road racing when there is no active factory support for the effort. Toyota could learn a few things from Mazda about how to support their sportscar offerings.

I checked the entry list for the the Utah race this weekend and found that there are two Scion FR-S entered in the TCA class in addition to the TMG 86. Good luck to all those guys!
Entry list here: http://files.world-challenge.com/eve...-EntryList.pdf

Well, the 86 is a TMG car and is sponsored in this race by TRD. Maybe that's a start?

First race over. 86 started 5th and finished 3rd behind a Civic Si and a Mazda MX-5 Global Cup car. Scion FR-S finished 7th. Next race is at 7 PM EST.
Podium finish not bad for first race for the car in North America.
