That sucks... is it really a fire hazard? I'm going to replace my gasket next week hopefully. Already ordered the part and everything. Was it a lot?

Would the job for cam cover removal involve removing the engine? I'm guessing without warranty cover it's gonna be an expensive job due to labour hours.

I have a friend who's going to help me through it. We read somewhere that it is only a 2hr job. We were thinking maybe 3 at the least. I think we might be able to do it without rejoicing the engine. A lot of the wrx guys do it. Some guys on here also reported being able to swap out the spark plugs without removing the engine. Gasket is around 31 dollars with taxes. And my friend said he wasn't going to charge me, but I insisted paying him the 75/hr

I just discovered this problem, but under very odd circumstances.

I just had my engine replaced, the old engine having expired after 35k miles and #3 & #4 rod bearings failed. I had no problems with the first engine until the loud knocking noise...

My new engine has 3k miles and started smelling/smoking this past weekend. I took it in and they gave me a loaner immediately. I told the SA about this post and the fix, but when I went back this evening it looked like they had just looked at the problem, not having done anything yet. Gonna call in the morning, SA was gone and no notes in the system this evening.

Just noticed a slight burning smell after changing my transmission fluid and rear diff fluid, figured it might of just been some fluid burning off that i spilled. Smell didn't go away, looked at this thread and saw that my cam plate was wet and had lots of grime on it and figured that must be the cause of the leak, but it looked like there was no fresh oil leaking but did see a little further up from the front of the car i had some oil leaking down onto the exhaust, never dripped onto the ground as it was burning off. Dealer says its the Cam carrier cover, engine has to be pulled. Under warranty and gave me a loaner for the time being.

I have a 2013 Manual. 32k miles

I noticed a few fresh drops of oil at the bottom of the plate on mine today. I smelled some slight burning oil every now and then while driving spiritedly. I'll torque to 12 ft/lbs, clean it up, then recheck in a week to see if it's still a problem.

Hey guys, I have similar problem here.
So about a week ago I decided to put an aftermarket exhaust (Tomei header, Milltek o/p and frontpipe) and I saw an oil leak on right cylinder head from valve cover.
I brought car to the dealership today and they refused to do anything because of aftermarket exhaust. They are saying that because OE parts have heat shields on them and aftermarket don't there is too much heat created by overpipe and this is what damaged gasket.
I have OE overpipe in my garage and it's heat shield is also covered with oil, so this proofs that oil leak was there before I put upgrades on.
What do you think: is there a chance that other dealership will fix it? What if I'll put OE overpipe back on car with heat shield and bring it to different dealership will they see comments from this one mentioning aftermarket exhaust?

I don't mind fixing it myself if it actually was my fault, but it isn't and I hate the fact that every time I go to dealership they are trying to find an excuse to not honor Toyota's warranty.
I had that "clucking handbrake" issue and 2 dealerships just told me to pay for diagnostics without promising to do anything about it, but I finally got it fixed today under warranty (at the same place which denied fixing oil leak).
Last week my rear tire started to leak pressure and I had to spend about 4 hrs in dealership to make them replace it under warranty and they were denying it until I called Toyota Financial Services who sold me premium plus program which covers tires even if there is a nail in it.
I have that "cricket noise" from the high pressure fuel pump and again got denial from dealership when I brought a car to them because TSB was for cars which are older than mine.

Sorry for providing so much details but it's getting to the point where I just want to sell this piece of junk (speaking of car's reliability) and buy a 25yrs old 240sx and maintain it myself rather than have a new car which keeps breaking down and dealers are denying to fix it.

Cars used to be built to last such as the 240sx... newer cars are not made nearly as well. Sure on paper they perform better than older cars but the quality isn't there anymore. Look at the newer mustangs the body panels don't even line up correctly normally. Kinda like cell phones... flip phones lasted forever... the newer phones last around 2 years. I love the twins but any new car isn't going to last as long as older cars from the 90s in my personal opinion.

Oh wow, this is a common problem huh?...

Dealer found 7-8 different oil leaks, been at the dealer since Saturday. Covering it under extended warranty. It's a first year model so I know the risks but dang. Only 67k miles FWIW

You're lucky. Mine is a 2015 with only 10,000 miles

At this point it's not money keeping me from going FI. It's fear that this POS will blow up NA, let alone FI.

If you have the time and knowledge to replace your exhaust with the OEM parts, it may help your case stay on topic at a different dealership b/c they won't have an excuse to deny warranty service.

Read through the attached Subaru TSB and if your symptoms match, print this out and take it with you to the dealership.

Long story short, the Toyota dealership I went to never had a case like this before mine, looked at me like I was speaking jibberish b/c I'm a female, and got on board when I showed them the Subaru TSB. It took 3 different appts over 16 days, but it was all under warranty and so far no new leaks for me *knock-on-wood*

Good luck on your oil leaking journey!
