Well, tell that to my friend, who put a full K&N CAI in his Chevy SS and got ~10-15whp gain(iirc). And yes,he has the dyno sheet to prove it,so...

This is not a Chevy SS. This is an FR-S. Of course there are many cars where the intake could be improved. This is just not one of them. There are some CAI's that look cool or they make a cool noise, but I don't think any improve on the performance of the OEM. Without the stupid sound tube of course.

But this post got me wondering if my shifter really does have a problem.
If you go out to your car and put it in gear. Engine off. And move the gear shift left and right. Is there no play at all? Try any gear. Every gear. Is there really no play at all?
I really goota know.

If it feels okay I don't think I would worry about it

On my 2018 BRZ with stock shifter I get no play (well, maybe 1/16") front to back and about a 1/4" play left to right in gear (all the gears are about the same). In my Focus ST I replaced all the shifter bushings (including the cable ends) with solid aluminum and it still had more play than my BRZ.

A brand new 86 / BRZ does not have play in gear.

The loose shifter play in gear was the first thing I noticed after I got the car back from the shop after getting the clutch serviced, had 55k miles on the car.

The looseness does have an effect, but the shifting action is "good enough" to live with, the 86 transmission is actually pretty great if you can drive it well enough and keep the car in good service.

Why would you mess with the shifter when changing the clutch out? I sat back and watched my mechanic change out my TOB and clutch and he didn't mess with the shifter at all.

Whatever the actual technical background, i'm glad that admins acted and shitstorm ended. Even if there always are two sides of truth (i'm guessing that banned OP thinks that it's all undeserved and he is innocent victim that did everything right and it's unhelpful and ungrateful community, evil trolls, fascist admins, that are at fault), nothing can warrant rude swearing as in cleaned up posts, pissing off many in community. Even if there had been mega-useful good technical info that would benefit lot of owners on fixing very common issue, it's not enough to justify being hostile prick. Even if particular issue hasn't affected me i always like reading threads (i'm sure many do) in technical sections to rise own technical knowledge in general, learn new things, familiarize with different areas of car that i like .. unless it turns out like this.

If you drop the trans out to change the clutch you have to disconnect the shifter linkage and remove the retaining pins for the shift assembly. You can do it from under the car so you likely did not see him mess with it.

Jack car up pull transmission replace either centering springs and or detent balls. Hunt stiffer springs for both if you really hate it. You could also modify some of the parts in the transmission to make it tighter. Post an exploded view of the transmission and I will let you know which ones they are.
If its in gear in the video weld hockey stick then grind it down to tighter tolerances.

The CD009 has centering springs so you could get the conversion from mazworx to fix it depending on how much you hate it. .

The bushings you are wanting to replace are very thin so I'm not so sure they would cause problems.
