That's almost Garage Queen status!
2021 was definitely a slow year for driving. Only did ~3200 km, but nearly 1100 of those were on track. Thus far this year the car has gone about 6000 km with the cross continent road trip.

Track miles are like dog years.

I was just looking at this the other day. I dropped mileage driven as well. Pre-2020 I have been averaging about a little over 21,000 miles per year. In 2020 and 2021 19,054 and 18,921 respectively.

Zero track miles though.

I am way way down. If I had put as few miles a year on the Lava I would probably still have it. Mind you then Villain would not have posted and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

iirc, that wasn't indicated how the hakone purchase came together. it had everything to do with ichi filling us in (as much as he could) from his conversations with tetsuya tada on the 2nd gen changes, so you pursued the purchase before the 2nd gen's came out so you weren't 'stuck' having to get something you didn't like as much!

my average mileage went way up during covid. 300mi road trips every weekend to keep myself sane when the world was losing it added up.

my mileage actually went down since everything opened back up and those road trips started having too much traffic to be entertaining and relaxing anymore. now i probably won't break 3k miles for the year...

That was one of the factors for sure, probably the deciding one really, but it was only one of three reasons.

At that point in time I had no idea my driving was going to drop off as much as it did. Although I had no issues with the Lava it was 6 years old and over 100,000 miles. It was time to either start sinking money into it or start all over with a fresh car. Since my mileage payments had already paid it off starting fresh was the more prudent action. Had I known what the future held I would probably have held on to it.

Even then I was still on the fence and wavering on if I was going to replace it at all. Then I found that the last MT in the country could be had with zero extra costs (even shipping it across the country) it was a done deal. I wanted one when it was a Japan only special edition and before we even knew we were getting them here. https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=132926

Why would you have to start sinking money into it after only 100,000 miles?
Oil changes aren't that expensive.

That is when you can expect things to start to wear out.
Not saying they would but at that point in time I would have doubled the mileage in another 3 years.
Really just risk management.

I have the same benchmark but my experience has it at 200K miles. The FRS (now at 208K miles) has been problem free.

Of course, it will now break down on my way home this evening.

I'm low on miles (50k) for a 10 year old car, but it's the time that also takes a toll on certain parts. My throw-out bearing already failed, the belts are starting to squeak, brake shoes need changing, hoses are starting to dry out, these kind of things.

I've also gone thru two sets of driver's side floor mats after I wore holes thru them. I finally settled on some all-weather rubber mats that seem to be able to take the abuse.

I have the same philosophy. The problem is that a 200,000 mile car has very little trade in value. It's worth more to me to just keep it. That's why I still have a Mk 4 GTI with 300,000 miles. But it does come in handy when I need to replace my TOB every few years. I don't need a rental car.

Trade-in value has never been a concern for me. If it was, I'd have to trade cars every year, and I don't like car payments that much.

In fact, I can't remember the last time I actually traded in a car of any value. Usually I pass it along to a family member or the dealer gives me scrap value for it.

I should add if I lived in an area that had "deep winter" like @Tcoat I could see where 100,000 could be the mark. I have to basically deal only with mechanical issues where the whole body rusting away thing comes into play the further North you get.

Other than a few very notable exceptions (2008 to 2012 Mazdas) cars totally rusting out here has not been an issue for about 20 years. There are loads of 10+ year old cars around that are at least visibly rust free. Once upon a time it was not uncommon too see 5 year old cars that were actually missing whole body panels to rust.
Winter driving does take it's toll on other parts though.

My last 4 cars all had so many miles on them that they were valueless at trade in anyway. I traded them anyway just to not have the hassle of selling privately. The only reason I sold the FRS privately was because I had sentimental attachment to it and wanted to see it go to just the right home.
As it was the original plan was to trade the FRS for another after 4 years and then buy a Jag Type F as my retirement car. I threw that plan out the window about 2 years into the FRS. The Hakone is the perfect iteration of the car for my tastes and it will stay forever now. Sorry Jaguar you lost a sale!
