Winter tires

Hi All,
First, I would like to mention that I read most of the related topics. Still confused after talking some of the shops.

I want to get winter tires (Michelin x-ice xi)on the stock rims due to my weekly commute between Boston and NYC. Once the winter is over (temp is >40-50) I plan to get a new set of rim/wheel/tpms.

After searching online I went To Sullivan Tires and got the quote below.

It’s just $3 more/per tire than Tire rack and has -70 off for installation. $103 is fine for the install/ balance. They will check the alignment for free.
Car is 1,5 year old and has been serviced at the dealer every time for the entire 38K mikes. No uneven wear was observed during tire rotations. I am not sure what the acceptable range for the alignment is but don’t expect any problems since I don’t feel anything wrong when driving. Not sure if alignment is needed! Besides, I believe that the maintenance and protection plan is a little waste of money! Any comments on these?

Please, can I also get some suggestions regarding the best way to prepare for the new rim/wheel/tpms set? Briefly is it as;

1) get winter tires on stock rims/tpms (installed at the shop and programmed if needed)
2) get the new rim/wheel/tpms (maybe tire rack providing everything mounted)
3) go to selected shop and get your tpms programmed from winter to summer set.
4) get a reprogramming tool to change your tires yourself

Maybe there are missing part here and I would like to get any suggestion from those who went through this.

Thanks

as of now, i swap my winters setup to my summers vice versa at my house, then go to a tire shop to get the tmps re programmed. i didnt end up getting a tool to do it myself, i suppose if its easy enough thats something id look ito doing myself.

I have purchased wheel/tire combo from tirerack before and id recommend that, no drama. vivid ]racing has a much better selection of wheels, so you might buy wheels there, and tires from tirerack, bring them in the back of a truck to get mounted at ur local tire shop and tpms set

I personally don't care about TPMS. If you have a blow out you will know. If you check your tire pressures regularly, you will know. It's really fdesigned for the sort of people that don't know that you need to change oil/do maintenance etc.

Tire rack has the rim/wheel combo which consider but not sure about the tpms they provide. Read some issues about it. Will check the expensive oem ones or the similar denso ones on amazon. Not sure about getting empty ones and do a clone.

Totally agree! Just don’t want to see the dash light or put a tape on it

If you store the inflated TPMS wheels less than about 50ft from the car, you can run summer tires without sensors and have no light. It turns on after 20-30min of driving, but I dont commute that far. I have no sensors and no light all summer.

Discount Tire does TPMS programming for FREE if you get the tires from them.

If you only want 1 set of TPMS, I highly recommend to have them installed on your winters because you want to be alerted early on like at home if your tire has lost significant pressure. Why? Because you don't want to work on, worse get stuck, outside in an adverse weather condition

If you can get them to take off the "alignment" and the "protection plan" I'd do it. You don't need an alignment after getting tires put on, and the protection plan is unnecessary in my opinion.

The alignment check is free, I would opt for that. If your toe is way off then you'll want to spend the money to correct it.

My rear toe has slipped twice now since my first alignment in the spring.

I went with number 4 and bought a TPM quickset online which stores two sets of sensors and programs through the obdii port. You can use the tool to easily reprogram back and forth as many times as you like.

I hated the X-Ice from day one. I just replaced them with over 80% tread left for Blizzak WS90s and couldn't be happier.

For years I went with MPSS on aftermarket wheels for summer and Blizzaks on stock wheels for winter. Now that I've had my BRZ for nearly 8 years and I'm telecommuting for work, I decided to go with Michelin Pilot A/S 3+'s on my aftermarket wheels for year-round use.

I also use the Quickset device to reprogram the TPMS codes. You can get the TPMS sensors on ebay for cheap, I did this in 2014 and they still work.
