Oil cooler idea
I've been watching all of these oil coolers coming out and i keep wondering why we only see kits that I find to be overly complicated. The oil circuit is a system that I think should be kept as short and simple as possible in order to keep possible failures to a minimum.
So, in that vane, has anyone put any thought into something like these? http://www.lxforums.com/board/f77/mo...3/#post4369805 http://forums.corral.net/forums/5-0-...oler-help.html http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts...KeyField=12905 If we could adapt it to the oil filter, I think putting it in series with the heater core would be pretty easy. This would keep the coolant flow constant even if the thermostat is closed, it would self regulate the oil temperature, and should be fairly easy to plump to the coolant side. Any thoughts? |

Robi's setup does something similar, except using the radiator to provide both water and some air cooling to the oil.
Those OEM style systems in general I haven't found to be super helpful, my ITR still hits close to 300 degrees oil temps on the track with one. The cooling is happening from the water coolant, but the housing gets heatsoaked and the oil isn't there long enough to cool much. If I werent going for a separate cooler, I'd run Robi's setup instead.

It's another option, but honestly to me your just trading complexity in one system of complexity in another.

plus someone already makes it for our cars, HKS or greddy i think. The Robispec route is the best idea IMO as it addresses both oil and coolant cooling capacity with a single solution.

I have been trying to figure this out for a while now. I think we are better off trying to get a stand alone heat exchanger and using a sandwich plate with a built in thermostat. The issue I am having right now is that, as I understand it, the upper passenger side of the radiator is the hot side where we want to plumb in the heat exchanger. There is not much room there to put a heat exchanger in, meaning some serious plumbing is involved and/or the use of a very small heat exchanger. Still working on it...
