I totally agree. I put mine on my check card but I wanted them to take the money. It means they have more of an obligation.

That has to be 2 cars a month for each dealer. Just makes no sense if it was for the entire year. That would be around 1,500 cars produced for just the first year. However, for that SoCal group buy, it looked like there was 10 or so deposits from this forum, and then another 20 from the other sales reps at the store, which totals around 30. At the rate of 2/month, it would take over a year to fill their preorders.

I guess we are all going to sitting on pins and needles until the truth surfaces.

As long as they have it in writing that their deposit is fully refundable they should be ok.

Since this car is going to be in high demand, you already forefit your attempt to bargain and get the best deal.

OP, congrats on being the first one, hopefully it works out smoothly.

Makes a lot of sense. This isn't going to be a high volume car. 2 cars per month averages out to 14400 cars for the first 12 months which is more than I would have expected. that is 34k cars for the 2013MY if you assume scion sells the same # of cars. That would put it on par with the first year of Miata sales back in 1990 which was a less expensive car in a more prosperous economic period.

Also worth noting that mazda has only sold between 10-15k miatas per year lately which means that production will probably ramp down pretty quickly after the initial demand is met.

You would also need to look to see where the subaru dealers are as high volume dealers will get more cars compared to the south dakota dealerships which probably won't get any unless a customer orders one.

^ Two cars per month? That's optimistic. I'd guess 2 cars until mid-summer, with rest being pre-orders, opening some time in June/July with wait to be determined by factory capacity constraints.

I would hope that there would be a lot more than 2 cars before mid June/July. The factory should be cranking out cars as we speak and stock piling them for delivery. This is the 1 chance they have to get ahead of demand...after these first cars go they will be playing catch up for a long time.

It takes about a month to get the cars here from japan and then another week or two to get to the dealership depending on what coast you are on so at the very least production needs to start pretty soon if it hasn't already.

I thought production only starts in Spring, probably late March.

I wouldn't be so hopeful. Japan is already sold out, and honestly I think they're probably more focused on building JDM cars than they are USDM cars...just look at how much marketing they're doing over there vs. over here. They're telling the Japanese guys that if they didn't pre-order yet, they won't get their cars till August already. And this is February. I'm just happy they're not delaying the launch by 6 months here considering the demand in Japan.
