Correct. I've never actually had one cash it until I bought the car. It's not worth their time to track it and refund it if you back out.

I put $500 down to be first in line for the FR-S at my local dealer. Just make sure to get everything in writing because "he said..." won't hold up in court.

Remember, car dealers are the scum of the earth, it's ok to be friendly but get everything in writing!

Ok, emailed him back. Asked for everything in writing, asked about MSRP, asked about pricing. Kept it cordial yet professional. Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions. I'll report back when I hear something.

I'm getting excited!

Question is, are the replies from sales managers or the salesman? The individual salesman's knowledge of the situation can vary quite drastically. Good example, Subie dealership we bought my wife's Impreza at. Another person on this board spoke to the same dealership and they said they're taking pre-order deposits. When I asked the salesman we were working with about the BRZ, he had little knowledge on the BRZ and said they aren't allowed to take any pre-order deposits.

Yeah sorry, generalizations are bad.

What I meant to say is "make sure to get everything in writing so you know what you are getting into"

I tried to reach out to the Subaru dealers in my area and they seem to all be scum trying to get me to come into the dealership to sell me a car.

I sent them all the same email asking if I could put a deposit for a 2013 BRZ premium and they all send me emails about scheduling test drives and stuff "for the subaru I'm interested in" ... They seem to not even read my inquiry and send a copy pasted email.

Yeah always use a check for your deposits. They won't cash the check if you use it as a deposit. They will cash it when you buy the car.

Lol @ the interest on $500 bucks. My only advice is yo be sure whatever you hive a dealer is refundable and you have documentation to prove it. Until there are prices this is the best anyone is gonna get.

Yeah but do you really want them to not cash it? If they don't money has not changed hands and anything you have agreed to in writing or not hold up.

My deposit check has been cashed already.
State law mandates 100% refundable deposits, so it's not like they cached a non-refundable deposit, which would make sense.

The dealership should never be cashing your check unles you are purchasing a car that actually requires an order a la ferrari or aston martin. In those cases you usually lose your deposit if you don't purchase the car when it comes in.

Sounds good. And I was looking at the interest thing from a debt perspective as in, the interest on the last $500 I owe on my Visa. It'll catch up with you!

Actually Dave, our Subaru dealer cashed my deposit check, which I am actually very happy about, as this gives me a greater sense of confidence that they are going to honor our deal, otherwise, if they were on the fence, or having second thoughts, they wouldn't waste the effort in cashing it, knowing I would request a refund if the deal fell thru.

I was afraid maybe you meant this. Don't carry credit card balances!
