According to Car and Driver this Lexus UC will have a hybrid transmission. Or something along those words.

The picture used in the article is of a GR86. There is a strong possibility the bumper was camouflaged, but it really looks like the image was photographed with some poor brush marks.

There is zero chance of this. Toyota already has a premium sports car in two trims—the 2.0 and 3.0 Supras. If you know anything about Lexus then you understand that Lexus wouldn’t rebadge a GR86 with some extra sound deadening, thicker glass, leather, etc and call it a Lexus. The demand for a smaller Lexus just isn’t there.

In all likelihood, the next gen GR86 will be a hybrid, if it exists at all.

I haven't looked into the rumors/news but when I hear of hybrid transmission, I think of a mild hybrid system where the transmission has an integrated electric motor (it's a thing).

Most people refer to hybrids as EV hybrids, but there can be different types of hybrid transmissions. For instance, Toyota developed a CVT that also utilizes a stationary 1st gear of a more traditional transmission to aid in takeoffs.

Typically, hybrids deploy a sandwich plate between the ICE and transmission, but there are hybrid transmissions that integrate the electric motor into the transmission. See below:

Would you put a deposit down before they make it, like a group buy. Let’s say 25%, I know I would. I always wondered if you could get a manufacturers to build something like that if you get enough people to buy in. The main reason they won’t build it is because the sales are so unknown compared to the main stream crossovers, trucks and sedans they sell.

Even the Porsche 918?

ICEs have character in torque delivery, redline and sound, which is engaging as an enthusiast, but a hybrid or electric car could be designed that is more of a driver’s car than many ICEs basic or even sporty. The DNA of enjoyable sporty car is also derived in handling, steering responsiveness, chassis stiffness and feedback, light weight, balanced and low weight distribution, horsepower, sporty looks and a low seating position with bolstering, etc and for me, getting to row my own gears. In theory, an EV could provide these things along with excellent braking due to regen along with a set of performance brakes. I wouldn’t say it is inherently boring.

Honest question: If the ICE experience could be simulated effectively with a sound system, chassis vibrators, throttle mapping and perfumed odors of gasoline and exhaust, would people still want ICEs? I wonder.

I would like to see that experiment done as well, but seems crazy that I might lose my ICE when cow farts are just as bad and I can buy a steak anywhere. I mean the strip mining needed for batteries for EV will have a profound effect on the environment.

I'm a vegan, so I whole heartedly agree.

Mining is always going to have an impact, but batteries are going to be a piece in a sustainable future. Batteries will get more green. Batteries will get smaller after they get bigger. Mining will shift to recycling, as costs change, as the industry changes, as production volume stabilizes, etc. Hydrogen will invariably replace large batteries, but it will require a future with an abundance of renewables to make hydrogen realistic, assuming the prospects of large batteries becomes more expensive or becomes unfavorable from an environmental perspective. Regardless, fossil fuels will reach their end long before we run out of fossil fuels, so we need to think beyond this limited resource.

I'm actually not a big fan of Porsches I also don't like hybrids. For me, it should be either ICE or EV. Hybrid powerplant only adds unnecessary weight and complexity.

I'm pretty sure that EVs can be at least just as fun as ICEs. Moreover I hope there'll be multiple swap kits available so that people can convert their cars. It's also more sustainable rather than buying the whole new car, if anyone cares about that. I don't care too much, but it's a nice bonus.
