It's unlocking based on a proximity sensor in the handle that senses your hand in conjunction with the FOB in range. That same prox sensor will lock the car for you if you hold your hand by the handle before you walk away.

This all requires interaction, though, and is not automatic. The range of the FOB alone does nothing for any of this.

The delayed re-lock if I don't open the door after hitting unlock on the FOB occurs though. That's totally expected and normal. It's a safety mechanism for accidental FOB button pushes.
You are right there is probably something subtle I am doing as I exit the car. I found in the manual about the beeping when drying the car and the relock after an unlock. No mention of fob proximity locking the car. I really need to consciously lock the car now as I never have before.

What do you think? The airbag electronic is different, as Japanese cars don't have the option to disable passenger airbag...
IDK about the keys (mine has keyless entry, one friend replaced the ECM with a used one and didn't have to pair the keys)...
steve99 said ECMs are identical in all car all over the world, manual or auto is the same, just different calibration rom
Those things are under other ECUs and not on ECM and you won t achieve anything swapping it with a JDM ECM

OK, I replaced the body computer with the JDM one, now I have the lock/unlock beep (that can be enabled or disabled).
Other differences from the EU model: follow me home function is no more present, there's an option to slow down the headlight ignition when set to auto, and there's another annoying thing, a repeating beep when put in reverse, that can't be disabled. Something like the one in trucks, but inside the car.
This would be funny if I'd not have reverse sensors...
Oh, now there's an option that can be enabled in Security tab, but I don't know what it is...

if your “new" option in the security tab is an alarm, it'll honk and flash the lights if the doors et al. are opened without using the remote to unlock it after being locked with the remote.

To test: lock with remote, unlock with key, open door, all hell breaks loose.

I forgot I had enabled this setting before putting my car away for the winter and for some reason I locked the doors (habit probably). Then, I removed the battery from the fob to avoid broadcasting the signal all winter for no reason (also, there had been someone signal jacking fobs and steeling cars in the area). A week later I realized my sunglasses and phone charger were still in the BRZ so I unlocked it with the key and couldn't hear anything for a few days after being in a closed garage with a blaring horn (mild exaggeration, but it was loud). Touching the fob to the start button killed the noise.

Just checked, it doesn't act as you said in mine, the only differences I found enabling that security function is the the security led in the dash is fixed and not blinking, and that internal unlock button is disabled.

May somebody please tell me if US cars have this features and if they can be enabled/disabled?

Lock unlock beeps
Follow me home
Reverse beeping

Thanks!

On my USDM default factory settings:

Lock unlock beeps - Yes
Follow me home - Yes
Reverse beeping - No

But you said you got a JDM module, not US right?

@gpvecchi just caught up here... relating to your question mine only has a single long beep when placed into reverse, but will not beep after or like a reverse sensor. Mine has no reverse sensors by the way.

edit: beeps do go on and on in reverse, even without reverse sensors

Exactly my issue, it beeps like reverse sensor, and I have them! Now it's a mess of beeps...

@gpvecchi I have made a mistake - the car does go on beeping when on reverse. I got confused with another car of mine :/

JDM Facelifted MT

Reverse Beep - yes
Lock/Unlock Beep - yes
Follow Me Home - no

I agree the reverse beep is a nightmare. But it did save me once or twice. Since the reverse is next to first gear it saved me from launching forward when i was in a rush.

PS: Its my first car with reverse next to first gear

But Im used to it now.

The beep in reverse in not annoying, it's not noisy. The issue is that I have reverse sensor, and it becomes an orgy of beeps...

Edit: I can't buy the US unit, or my A/C will switch to Fahreneit...

What was wrong with keeping it EU? It seems like that's the closest fit for what you want. Sure, it doesn't have the lock/unlock beep, but everything else is correct.

Those beeps...
Oh, and it adds alarm, EU models don't have alarm enabled.
I managed to enable it with the procedure found on this forum, the EU computer doesn't have it.
Now I'm planning to convert reverse sensor to visual notification.
