Chief engineer Tetsuya Tada let slip to Australia's Motor recently that he believes the new 86 will be "better than the Supra," although we're not sure exactly what he means by that." - Car & Driver

My guess is something akin to the old Celica All-Trac, utilizing the Subaru global platform and drivetrain. As of a matter of fact, I bet Toyota couldn't wait to shit all over another one of their old nameplates by letting it be basically a badge engineered car.

Hey Ichi, if thats true, at least it'll be like a return of the 2 door GC8's....ish. I imagine it keeping to a two door body is about the only thing it'll have in common with the 1st gen.

Love to see coupe WRX... but I wrote this somewhere. I don’t see why Subaru wanna kill the sale of BRZ (coupe) & WRX (Turbo awd) w 1 car? As a fan, it make sense... as a business perfective, it doesn’t make sense.

Also Tada-san isn’t involve in current 86 project (iirc), he knows few info, but don’t think he knows a lot. Tbh I’m not even sure Toyota knows what’s going on atm. & let’s face it, he is the father of 86... do you think, he gonna talk trash bout 86 even he’s not involved? I’ve rarely heard him talk bad about anything. Unless somehow they stiffen up the chassis more than Supra plus made it lighter AND Subaru build better FA20 engine NA, take all those article as a grain of salt.

toyota as a brand does have a back story of taking something that is different and slowly altering it into something bland, boring, and predictable.

I'm just adding up the evidence before me, though you make a good point about the Car & Driver quote, as it wasn't said directly to them.

They're planning on jointly working together to make AWD cars that are fun to drive, and we're being told price and weight are taking a big jump. I can think of few things that add more weight to an established platform, or by changing platforms to accommodate the additions, than adding AWD and turbo.

Just gotta wait and see I suppose.

Complete shot in the dark and seems quite stupid but, maybe it has to do potential brand loyalty and total sales favoring Toyota for years.

A larger, AWD would certainly cater to Suabru's targeted market more than Toyota's.

I think the quote was taken out of context. I dont think he specifically said it will be better than the Supra, but he said something along the lines of the public expects or wants it to be better than the Supra.

If it was the interview that was videoed that I think it was he said something like "will do some things as well as". It was hard to watch because the interview was supposed to be about the Supra release and the dude kept asking him about the 86. Tada was visibly getting pissed off near the end and just sort of cut off the 86 questions and said something like "Enough about that now the new Supra will..."

That's easy, not enough market for all of them. You can maybe pick one of three but not all.

I would actually consider an AWD small sports car if it was in the right configuration even it if was a little heavier (i don't really care about weight since I'm not a track guy with my DD).

Yes, I'm looking at you Nissan MID4. Nissan is still dead to me for not taking it to production.

Again with the 2.4 turbo rumors?

Also today, R&T mentioned a hybrid MR2.

They must have missed their daily click quota on 86 news.

Gotta clickbait somehow.

And throw in a hybrid MR2 rumor just to keep that ball rolling because clickbait.
