Avoid automated carwashes (really all carwashes that you don't do yourself - by hand) like the clap if you care about your car.

I totally disagree. There is nothing wrong with using a GOOD touchless wash. At least around here. Maybe places that reuse the water may be different.
I have used certain touchless washes untold thousands of times over my last 5 cars and never had a single issue. From October to April that is all I use and that can be two or even 3 times a week (I get an unlimited pass).
I do however check reviews very closely before using a new one and stick to those that I know as much as possible.
Do avoid brush, roller or "soft touch" places like the clap though!

Are there any particular brands of touchless equipment that you have found to be both harmless and do a good job?

No. They vary. It think it is more a case of how much maintenance and upkeep they do. If a bay is dirty and worn out looking I steer far far away.

Then let me rephrase. I avoid all automatic car washes like the clap because I like my car. It helps that I am able to hand wash my car from the beginning of most Januarys to the end of most Decembers though, and the only salt is on the beach and my fries.

I would probably as well if it was an option. Not because I am worried about what a good touchless wash will do to the car (nothing but clean it) but because I love hand washing it.

Some people prefer to wash by hand. Others prefer to have it done for them

ONR rinseless wash is a game changer for those who don't have access to a hose or live at a condo/apartment/whatever. Stuff is awesome.

The thing is there is California "dirty" and then there is real world dirty.

This is only 45 minutes after it had been washed so rinseless washes ain't gonna' do shit!

Touchless washes are good for those who

A) Have done proper surface prep prior to the winter months with a good sealant, ceramic/graphene layer.

B) People who don't mind having some debris stuck on the paint for a few months ((A) group won't deal with this as much) and mostly want to wash the undercarriage.

I only use the touch-less washes in the winter months, but because I do extensive prep before them. I prefer washing my car by hand, myself, I learned my lesson with my last car. Other than that, is just keeping an eye on bird droppings from time to time with an always ready quick detailer and a microfiber towel inside the car.

Preferably, I would love to be able to store the car in the winter, but proper paint preparation can mitigate some of the downsides of touch-less washes, and steer you away from those godawful brush washes.

I do wonder about the real legality of the "not responsible for damage" signs. Just because they state it like that doesn't mean it's legally enforceable. They're still responsible if their equipment causes damage. Usually this is just to scare off people who won't push that hard.

This one should be easy to show if they have cameras at the wash. How it looked going in =/= how it looked coming out.

Just like the dump trucks that say "not responsible for broken windshields". If they didn't secure their load and stones fall off the top, they're still responsible. Show a dashcam of the rocks coming off the truck and they're 100% on the hook for any damage to your car.

Well I got the car back and it’s looking good. Only issue is I now have a non-broken grille, so I have 0 idea of how to get my oil cooler block off plate without removing the bumper (and potentially ruining the bumper gap). But overall I’m very happy. Not happy the gas station owner didn’t step up, but I’m just chalking it up to it being just a way some people operate.

Parkway Auto Body in Dublin, CA for anyone that’s curious. They buffed my headlights for free which is pretty cool.

Heh, don't forget it does snow in CA too. There are large parts of CA that aren't the bay area and LA.

You're right though, that stuff would need a nice pre rinse for sure.

sorry to thread jack but I just noticed a 2" spot like that under my passenger headlight when I was washing my car today. My guess is that I got a little too close with the sprayer when I was washing it. I'm not interested in paying to have it fixed professionally since i plan to murder plenty of cones and this bumper is kinda shot anyways. Is that something that can be fixed with some touchup clear or will trying to spray it myself just make the whole bumper look worse?
