Corner weights - Toyota 86

Finally got round to weighing my car at my mates workshop.

My car is a NZDM Toyota 86 2013 manual. (RHD)

With me in the car, about 10kg of stuff in the boot, and about 15L of gas in the tank, it weighed 1316kg.
The corner weights were..
FL 349
FR 371
RL 293
RR 303

I reweighed the car without me, and with all the stuff I had in the boot taken out. Obviously it still had 15L of gas. Car now weighed in at 1194kg. Seeing as the car is advertised as being 1180kg with minimal gas, 1194kg makes sense with 15L gas.
The corners weighed in at...
FL 341
FR 331
RL 271
RR 251

This gives a front to rear weight ratio of F56:R44, without me. With me it's F55:R45

To confirm, my car is 100% how it was off the showroom floor. Nothing added or removed. My car didn't come with a spare. It came with a repair kit. This was in the car, with the toolkit & jack. The stuff I pulled out of the boot was unrelated stuff I had in there. My car has the 16inch rims.

Good to know. Thanks! I think it worth adding that your are from New Zealand and therefore the car is RHD => numbers for LHD should be slightly different, not exactly mirrored though.

I weighed my US market BRZ (premium). This is with a full tank of gas and nothing else extraneous (tools, mats, spare).

That's almost 100lbs less than the official weight of 2,762 lbs!

Considering that a NC MX-5 GT with hardtop comes in at 2593lbs, I'll never call the Twins heavy again.

That front:rear weight sounds a bit nose heavy. Is your garage level? Don't get me wrong, It's probably correct. But I'll never agree with why they put so much weight in the front. At least it's low in the chassis.

Would you prefer Porsche supply a transaxle or have a mid mount setup and no rear seats?

I would love to see an FR-S weighed with half a tank of gas, muffler delete, lightweight battery, and the items in the trunk removed.

The garage is very level. It's dead level within the uncertainty of my measuring equipment.

I think with some mild weight reduction, it would be possible to break 2600 lb without many compromises. Lithium battery, muffler delete (or light catback), light weight wheels and tires, etc could get you there. Getting under 2500 lb would take some compromises or real money.

The ideal weight distribution is not static 50:50. There is a dynamic weight shift during acceleration. Ultimately, you would want to have close to 50:50 during some level of acceleration. This means that you use some level of throttle without losing steering as you exist the corners. Also, there is some benefit to braking with the forward bias.

Bring it over and I'll weigh it.

Total weights line up when converted and allowing for the difference in fuel.

One notable point is the side to side weight difference between RHD and LHD. The LHD is much more balanced without driver as shown above, but this would then be thrown out when the driver is in the car, as the car at rest shows a slightly more weight on the drivers side already.

The RHD car is also heavier on the left side at rest, and the difference is much more than the LHD car. (Which surprises me) But, because the driver is on the right on the RHD car, when the driver enters, it then goes to balance the car out.

Problem for me being 110kg, is that my weight over does this, and then makes my RHD heavier on the right side when I am in it. Without sitting down and doing the exact maths, it would appear to me that a driver half my weight (assuming that weight is applyed proportionatly to each corner as my weight was) would balance the (RHD) car side to side perfectly. This would also make sense as a typical JDM customer would be around the 60kg weight.

You could then argue that a typical 60kg driver would not be as tall as I am, so the seat would be further forward, which would then add more of their weight to the front than the rear, when compared with myself.

Interesting results I think.
