Will these cars hold up to high mileage? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

My wife read me an article on Yahoo recently entitled "Which cars are most likely to last for 400,000 km?" Thats 248,000 miles, BTW.

I have never owned a boxer engined car or a Subaru for that matter. And mechanically I believe virtually all the wearing parts are from Subaru.

From those who have significant experience with Subarus, how much mileage do their cars typically hold up to before the scrap heap?

Incidently, my xB was on that list as well as 4 other Toyota products out of 10 vehicles listed.

just research how other N/A boxer motors hold up.

They hold up, but it really depends on how its maintained and driven. Abuse the hell out of it and don't maintain it, and it will never see 100k.

Drive it normally, perform the maintenance exactly how the manual states, I would expect 200k miles.

I had a subaru legacy wagon 98 and an impreza wagon 2001 both had over 140k the 2001 i tore the engine apart for a rebuild becuase the timing belt needed replacement and figured id give it a refresh anyways. But yes if you take care of them they will last quite a while.

wat about driven hard and well maintained

Take care of your car and it will take care of you. 100k mi Subarus are just well broken-in. And much the same goes for Toyotas. So I doubt this car will be different.

Not a Subaru, but I had a '99 Accord V6 with 250,000mi racked up. Still ran fine when I sold it. Take care of a car and it'll take care of you.

Then I would say you would need to do extra preventative maintenance and replace parts sooner. However, I am not an engineer or engine builder, im just using basic logic, so take it for whatever you think its worth.

There's a reason that Subaru's retain a rediculously high residual value and seem expensive when you look to buy them used. Mind you certain years have had problems (08+ STI's and their ringland failures, 09 WRX with spun bearings) but on the whole they last very well and retain their value very well. I think I remember reading that something like 90 or 95% of the subarus built in the last 10 years are still on the road.

From what I remember reading on here someone said the ringlands are a fair bit beefier on the FA20 so that shouldn't be an issue. Beyond the goofy problems with the CAM timing or whatever it is I have no concerns about the engine in this car lasting. The paint on the other hand... that was the worst (and only) thing that I'm sad to see Subaru contribute to the twins.

The interior of our cars will wear out LONG before the 200k mile mark.
