Body Work and Rust Prevention

Hey Guys,

Im wondering If anyone here does anything special to assist in rust prevention, specifically those with any body work . I'm running a wide body kit so the front fenders and rear quarter panels are cut of course. The rear quarter panels were welded with fiberglass over it and the front primered over. But just in case I was thinking about using some Mility Grade Cosmoline Rust inhibitor. Have you guys had any issues with rust? Its something Ive heard about but havent seen a single case of rust on google. Please dont lecture me on why body kits are dumb thanks.

hey mike/ i was asking a similar question of recent. my car is covered in white salt down low from the recent snow and salting . hard to get it to the car wash so often and besides, it underneath im concerned about. if you come up with an ideal product, please share. im looking into the one you mentioned above

I don't have any mods but I just wash on my car 1-3 weeks in the winter whenever it's tolerable outside and get Krown done anually. I'm hoping this regime works but I won't know for like ten years XD

hmmm.......since you have cut into the metal on the body of the car, I don't reckon it would hurt to cover those areas with some sort of rust proofing/inhibiter.

Military grade cosmoline .....

Brings to mind back-in-the-day ..... in the old Army, my first issued weapon was a M-1 rifle, thoroughly covered with pre WWII HD cosmoline.

My drill sergeant was the meanest E-5 the military has ever known ...... and I was the lowest scum in the military pond (yes, an ROTC cadet).

I (we) cleaned and he inspected/reinspected, those rifles waaay into the night. Our cleaning equipment made available to us was a bunch of used rags from the motor pool.

I hate cosmoline and after I was commissioned, I was going to look up that SOB, and order him to low crawl till his arms and legs fell off .....

Thanks for the input guys. Military Grade Cosmoline/Veto 342 seems to be the best product I found. I did hear that it was used in the military probably over 50 years or since ww2. I hear it protects in the craziest conditions like for military equipment transported across the ocean. Its also used for undercoating and guns(although humfrz I hear its a pain to remove). I figure Ill give it a try, seems to work well for anyone.

I have no first hand experience with this but I'm looking in the speedwaymotors.com catalog and they sell "restoration and refinishing products." They have a salt neutralizer (part# 307-68675) which removes salt without damaging the paint and rust blocker (307-4188) and rust blocker undercoat (307-4196). You might try looking into that

ACF-50 Aerospace anti-corrosion treatment.

Been using it on motorcycles in the winter for years.
Can get it on Amazon or at most small airports that have a parts shop.
Kind of sticky, and will attract dust, but you can wipe down the places that should be shiny.

Are you using it on your fr-s?
What is the viscosity of the produit, is it like an oil, or is it more like water?
Do you think it's safe for car paint?

i rustproofed my 10 year old accord with krown when i bought it and every year since then and it looks brand new underneath. I live in Toronto so its about as bad as it can get for cars here

When installing the body kit, I would have sanded, primed and painted underneath and undercoated the inner fender wells. It would have had the same rust prevention as the rest of the car. As to the fiberglass over metal, I've seen sub-par fiberglass jobs or ones using cheap resin actually start to hold water and cause premature rust.

On the cosmoline, this is a car, not a WWII era M-1 or Mosin.

It's oily/waxy sort of thing and will creep into all the cracks where moisture tends to soak in otherwise.
Won't hurt paint if you overspray, but no need if the paint is unbroken.
They use it on commercial aircraft to prevent corrosion on all the vulnerable wear areas.
All those internal ribs and the floors under galleys and restrooms.

Not on the FR-S yet. Haven't had it up in the air while thinking about that.
There's not a lot of salt used out here.

Amsoil HDMP for chassis parts, fluidfilm for body panels. I made my own nozzle and spray inside the quarter panel, inside doors, etc. with the fluid film. The HDMP goes on as a liquid and dries to a wax (and is a pain to get off) so I only use it for under body and such. All work very well.

I get a couple of cans of FluidFilm in the spring and fall and try to apply it everywhere I can fit the straw that comes with it. It's lanolin-based, so supposedly it doesn't damage paint, long-term, and being a light, loose and non-drying grease it flows well at most temps above ~50 degrees F, so it doesn't clog small openings. I like to think by applying it myself, I'm being more thorough than some 18 year old kid working at Ziebart or Rusty Jones (lol...long gone) for gas money would be..?
