2016 Insurance costs

Hi All,

I just joined the FRS family. I LOVE my car, but I just got my insurance rates back and WOW are they high. I haven't had any accidents or claims in three years and I am 38... IT is $2300 a year! I heard it is due to the higher accident rate with the frs. This isn't going to deter me from keeping my car, but DAMN!

That's odd, in Ontario Canada my insurance company it's actually cheaper to insure the FRS oppose to a Corolla. More Corolla's get in accidents here :P

it's because everyone that hopes in this immediately thinks they become The Stig and turn off TRAC

200hp and 151lbs of torque will still bite you on the ass if you get careless and reckless

For the one car? My FRS and wifes Soul is 148$ no tickets or accidents in 10 yrs. State Farm just keeps going up regardless. I also have my home with them. They say it's not the rate on the cars but the area I live in. Metro Atlanta

I forgot to say how much I was quoted...Bel Air quoted me $113 monthly for the FRS, my Corolla was $123

I'm 25 with no tickets or accidents.

What company? There are dozens of factors that calculate an individual's rate and frequency of accidents is just one of the minor ones. It is not accurate to automatically say it is the accident rate that raised the price.

LOL I saw that in yours I meant the OP. Some of the US insurance companies have raised their rates over the last year due to low profits overall not because of increased accident rates with one model of car.

Hi Tcoat, I am using Citizens/Hanover insurance, it might also be my area here in Detroit,mi. They had raised prices on low profile cars. I also tried a few other places for rates and they were high also, a bit cheaper but still close. I have both my car and home on the same plan. On the plus side, my mortgage insurance is low. But the car insurance is high, my fiancé's 2013 edge is half my rate at 1300.

Ahhh see there is the problem! Only Challengers and Camaros get good rates in that area.

I will wave to you from Windsor tomorrow.

Indeed there are tons of factors that come into play on top of just the car. I'm with Belair like @rkaywhodat, but my rates are higher despite having a lot more driving experience (I'm nearing 40, married) and a 10+ year clean record. Other factors include:
  • Your liability coverage ($1m or $2m)
  • Your Collision deductable
  • Your Comprehensive deductable
  • Your Direct Compensation deductable
  • Other policy riders like Accident Forgiveness, removal of glass coverage, rental car extensions, etc
  • Waiver of Depreciation
  • Winter tires discount
  • Mods on your car (well, ones you declare)
  • Anti-theft device
  • and maybe most importantly: Where you live!

When I lived downtown Toronto but had no parking spot in our apartment, I had the car registered and insured as in downtown Toronto even though it was always parked in Richmond Hill because the insurance rates in RH were a good couple hundred per year higher than downtown.

Impossible to truly compare apples to apples between people without having a better idea of coverage levels and history. At best you can determine if it's more expensive for you versus other cars since you will likely have similar insurance from one car to the next.

I feel lucky to be only paying $180 for full coverage on my FRS@25. Wish it were lower though.

Mine just went up significantly thanks to my husband putting my FR-S over a median. I imagine it's going to go up AGAIN in October after he scratched up the door on his brand new Focus ST.

We're paying $217 a month for both cars: 2014 FR-S Monogram and a 2016 Ford Focus ST. This is up from $177 a month in the last policy cycle (though then we had the FR-S and a 2012 Ford Focus SE, so some of the cost increase is due to his new car which also has a shiny turbo in it... and insurance seems to no likey the turbo).

We also have renter's insurance with Progressive and $500 deductible.

Wow Maine is supposed to have higher insurance costs than a lot of the country and I still only pay ~$1500/y

And that's as a 24 year old with 2 accidents (neither at-fault though). Never had any tickets though so I suppose that probably helps.
