Where are people getting first gen 86 airbags? Not possible to ship?

I have seen many cars that have swapped the Scion FR-S airbag for a Toyota 86 one. But when I try to order one online (ebay UK, Australian importer, etc) they say they can't ship airbags. How do people get 1st gen Toyota 86 airbags in the US?

why would you want the airbag? Just cut the logo off and add the toyota one. It is usually just a cover, not part of the airbag itself.

And no one will ship explosives.

They can only be shipped ground in most cases, can't do that from overseas...

I already have the metal Toyota sticker that covers the Scion logo on the steering wheel. I have a few issues with it. It is impossible to center exactly perfectly. It is not scratch resistant the way an OEM steering wheel logo would be. I have had 2 of them actually, and they both got immediately scratched up by people just wiping the interior down. It also just does not have a nice OEM looking quality to it the way the actual 86 airbag does.

I feel like there should be enough of them out there now that you could pick a used one up for cheap.

I get that. But people in the US have them somehow. They must be shipping them from somewhere. I wonder if there are exporters that will remove the detonator prior to shipping?

Bigger shops/manufacturers and such may import with eg. sea transport, containers and such, in big batches, and then sell/deliver to customer locally with ground transport. Not that competitive of shipping choice for customers for one-off small buy.

These are the places that have the proper training and certifications to ship and receive hazardous goods. They can not just ship such things to just anybody since the shipper would not be able to release it to an individual without the certification.

Go to a dealer. Pay dealer prices.

Do you mean the Toyota dealer? Would a US Toyota dealer even be able to order parts from another region?

This would be my last possible resort because the airbag would be like $700 from a dealer.

Not sure and very possibly not but worth a shot.

Are we sure the airbag is one piece with the airbag cover? Are they not separate things?

They are one sealed unit. In theory you could remove the cover and swap it but it would be very tricky and rather hazardous. Probably look like crap when you were done as well.

I'm not sure everyone is on the same page here. According to these 2 threads, it is possible to unscrew the detonator from a 1-stage JDM airbag and swap the cover onto your 2-stage USDM airbag. I don't think unscrewing a part on the back of the assembly would affect the appearance of the cover. I have seen many 86 airbags installed on an FR-S that look completely factory.

I am going to reach out to Nigel JDM parts and see if they can ship them somehow. That link in the thread is dead but maybe they can still get them. I was just really hoping someone knew of a way to get a used one in the US.

Yeah I was thinking along the lines of converting a new North American spec Toyota bag to the old FRS one which would take surgery.
Sure maybe you just have to switch over the detonator but you are back to square one of having to get one.
