VVT issues after Ecutek tune

Hi all,
I am in desperate need of help! I recently supercharged my 2013 frs (jackson racing c38 kit) and had delicious tuning cook me up a tune. For some reason noone seems to know why my vvt wont enable. It enables on stock ROMs but after trying 20ish different aftermarket tunes from Bill, the VVT wont enable.

The only other information about the car is that it had its short block redone about 2000 miles ago (no issues at all on stock tune) and a used JDL UEL catted header. Does anyone know if an exhaust leak in the header would cause this issue?

This happened to a few of us too, like @tomm.brz

For me, I had to redline the car in first gear about 10 miles and 2 days after a fresh reflash. It stayed on after that for weeks, until my timing chain guide let go of the chain )))

you mean that if you flash back to stock now with supercharger, it enables but with custom tune not?

did you try to drive for many miles with vvt off and then stop while idling to see if vvt goes to 1?

after rebuild my engine too is slow tl activate vvt, but after a while it stays on

tune should have jothing to do with this
just go drive it with vvt off keep it off boost and will go on eventually

if it s like mine, it can be slow each time you flash, specially if warm

try to flash while totally cold engine

Ecu wants to see at least 2 complete cycle (comprehensive of 2 cranking and starting of engine) with vvt on before activate it immediately at each start normally

Did your VVT work before the SC, after the motor?

Yes the car worked flawlessly before supercharger. The VVT still turns on on the stock tune, even with supercharger. This led me to believe it was an issue on the tune. Im not quite sure now tho.

I just put in an 11psi MAP sensor and got a new tune for that (the tune idles high about 1100rpm) to try and up the oil pressure and force the cams on. I went for a 10 mile drive and still nothing.

Im going to continue driving it keeping off boost and hope it turns on.

I thought about that but basically the entire engine was rebuilt by Toyota only 1500 miles ago. Plus it works fine on the stock tunes. Might be something to consider if this persists...

Rebuilt .. by chance not due valve spring recall? For mine dealership botched a bit and reinstalled back misaligned cam gears. They fixed it free of charge, but for a month i had car with like half the power in mid-top rpms (and not sure if driving with such was at fault or something else, after fixing main issue, i got new one, of blown injector seal). Logs of VVT positions were .. weird.

but it turns on with stock tune, so it should work

Can you log the drive with vvt off, logging every "vvt" value?

I think your tune idle setting may be a problem. I couple of other people who set idle speeds above 1000 jad issues getting cams to initilise.

The ecu want to see a whole bunch of conditions met before it activates cams after a flash or reset.

try a tune with idle set below 1000, say 800 rpm or less base idle.

let the car idle for at least two minutes after reflash at an idle arround 800 rpm.

I think, you should ask your money back and go to another tuner. Still having problems after 20 revisions is unacceptable. Since you already have the ECUTEK license now, JR might send you their factory tune at a discount. And it is an excellent tune.

Most of my tunes were identical to the stock idle of about 700rpm. It seems the second anything is done to the stock tune it doesn’t want to turn on. I’m thinking of going to a respected local shop so they can throw it on a dyno and really find out the issue. The rebuild was done for the valve spring that blew the engine. I’m sure if it was done wrong I can get it done for free but that would be last resort I think.
Such a frustrating issue...

Make a last try, it always work for me after a reflash, and if I don't do so, it won t ever come on like yours

Flash with car super cold
after the flash, press the accel pedal few times with Ign on to fasten learning
turn on engine, let it idle for 3 minutes, not more, DON T touch throttle
After 3 minutes, just drive, no matter what
Keep driving until oil is over 40 Celsius
Now slow down and stop at 0km/h while engine idling and put in neutral
Now you should see cam exhaust zero out, and vvt enables
If it doesnt enable, turn off engine.
Turn on again, and drive and reach also higher speed and use a lot of engine brake and try to revmatch during gear change

I swear i flashed a mod today to my car, and itnwas too hot, it took almost, 40 minutes to activate the fjrst time

try this and do everything as listed
