parking brake adjustment question....
Hey all,
I've replaced rotors and pads a bunch, but never messed with the parking brake. I followed the BRZ shop manual instructions (loosen cable adjustment nut, tighten star adjuster wheel until shoes bind rotor, then back it off 10 clicks, then adjust cable/lever). All seemed good. But when I pull the hand brake a few times, release it, there is a slight scratchy sound of the shoes hitting the inside of the rotor when spinning by hand... only through maybe 20% of the rotation.... like the shoes aren't quite centered. The manual says "check there is no brake drag". Is brake drag the sound of light scratching, or appreciable resistant to turning? Am I losing my mind or worrying about nothing? Searched here and generally, and I get a range of answers about what drag is and how much is ok... Thanks all. |

That's actually how my dad taught me to adjust drum brakes back in the day. If both drums just touch the pads through a few degrees of arc like you note, it's perfect. Once you take it out and operate it just a couple times, They won't even rub anymore.
