Installing '14-16 engine in a '13

It's been difficult to search for past threads on this, but what is required to install a '14-'16 engine in a '13? I have a '13 that's knocking. I'm looking for replacement engines (not much luck).

Is there a definitive list of what all is different?

I think the coilpack harness maybe different on the MY15+. Other than that I believe everything swaps easily unlike the MY17+ swap.

Thanks! It's looking more and more like a used engine is going to be hard to come by, even now knowing there are a few others model years that'll fit.
Looking at getting a shop to replace the small block now. Or I'll have to figure that out.

IMO, a short block would be the way to go. Make sure that you find a shop that knows these engines. Sealant in the wrong places has caused a lot of problems.

That's been my issue. Having a hell of a time getting shops to respond (at least in a timely manner) to get quotes.


Should be relatively easy cash for them...I'm pulling the engine and will drop it off then pick it back up when it's complete.

I feel your pain. I had to take my engine to a guy 2 hours away. He's so popular, he's had it since April and I'm still 4 weeks out from getting it back.

Yikes. This has me leaning towards attempting to replace the short block myself. I've never done that level of engine work but I think with enough attention to detail I might be able to pull it off. Problem is I don't know what I don't know.

There seems to be a lot of nuance to putting these engines together. Sealer has to be in the right places. There's a complicated sequence to torquing the heads. Valve lash is critical (all 16 of them). Cam timing has to be precise. The list goes on. There are videos and other forms of instruction available. For me, I know what I don't know. I want an engine that I can confidently track so I'm have a pro do my work.

Definitely avoid assembling a FA20 as your first short block build. You won't have a good time.

'14 motor is a direct swap. '15-16 do have the changed coil pack connector which helps prevent them from melting and disconnecting under high heat. They have metal supporting clips instead of being all plastic. You can upgrade to the newer style coil packs as long as you have the matching engine harness.

For 13-16 as long as the engine harness matches the coil packs and all sensors, it should be plug and play for any of those years. I am pretty sure one or two sensors are different between 13-14 and 15-16, but if they match your harness you're okay, and you can swap them to match without causing any problems.

I can't recall the one or two sensors that need to be changed, perhaps someone else can confirm or correct my memory, it's been a while...
