One might say they are "well-polished".

Well, yesterday was a fun day.

It was mrs humfrz's 71st birthday. Dang, that woman is getting old!

Our daughter took the clan up to Seattle to an "escape room". So, with 4 adults and 3 kids, I just stood back and watched. I must say that the females in my family are quite bright. The only thing I did was to remember the code to get out in an emergency. Yep, 9999# - I remembered that -

I'm sorely tempted to take a 2-3 month "funemployment" vacation. I realize I'm lucky to even be able to entertain that thought. But I'm awfully tired of what I'm dealing with at work and I kind of want to take some time to clear my headspace and figure out if I either want to try software engineering at yet another place or give up and pivot to some other field.

Gaps aren't great on a resume. No idea what funemployment is though...

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Funemployment is a period of time when individuals decide to enjoy the free time that comes with being unemployed until they find a new job.

The term was coined during the Great Recession when millions of workers lost their jobs.

It may be difficult to enjoy being funemployed if you have a family to support or heavy debt, like student loans.

People who are funemployed tend to participate in leisure activities such as traveling, volunteering, or socializing.

The funemployed don't worry about being jobless, with most relying heavily on savings to live.
i dunno, blowing through savings for fun time is literally every time i've gotten into financial trouble with a year of attempting it...

Gaps aren't such a big deal with tech as long as you can do the (albeit stupid) whiteboarding interviews. I constantly get emails from recruiters of top companies to come interview so I'm not so worried about getting good opportunities. Just the interviewing process since I suck at it.

Like soundman quoted, it's basically some time totally off to completely unwind. Normal vacation you can still feel stressed or depressed about returning to a situation so it's not always 100% freeing if you have a bad situation. It's only freeing really if you have a relatively decent job to return to.

Normally you'd maybe travel, read books you generally don't have time for, etc.

Obviously like soundman hinted at, you need money saved up that you can burn through on expenses. Especially the essentials like rent, food, gas, and, worst case scenario, medical expenses since you won't have insurance.

The problems are when you either don't have sufficient savings or don't have a reliable resource of opportunities to come back to.

Fortunately for me I'm very frugal generally so I've saved a lot. Plus I haven't taken many vacations or much time off especially due to covid. So I'd be able to cash out my PTO in addition to my normal savings and stuff.

Yeah you really need to be good at rationing the amount of money you can spend while also keeping a certain amount for emergencies and stuff. Plus you want to limit how long you're doing it for.

Not everyone can handle it and that's alright too. But generally since, like I said above, I'm pretty frugal, I could do alright.

But I dunno if I really will.

You might be able to get an extended unpaid leave without giving up the job. Depends on a lot, but hiring is never cheap. Then again, maybe you crave a change after a break. That's ok too.
There's no been no fun for my wife's forced exit to balance the books. Over two years and it's been a crap-ton of work for her but no pay. And no fun.
