No acceleration past 3000rpm Manual mode

Hello All. New here and just purchased a 2017 toyota 860 special edition about 3 weeks ago. It is an automatic. In normal automatic mode the car drives fine no issues. When I put the car in manual mode it is normal through 3rd gear but when I get to 4th gear and above the engine will not get up above 3000rpms. The car will get up to about 80mph and thats it. Doesnt matter if I floor it the RPMs just sit around 3000 and I can't go any faster. This is with the car warmed up and I have made no alterations to the car. Any Ideas? I'm taking her to the dealer on Monday but I have a feeling they may not be much help as I have no Warning lights on of any kind.

Why would they not be much help? There is a problem with your fairly new car. The dealer is exactly who needs to look at it.

OP just take it into the dealer as it sounds like it is in limp mode...

Your able to adjust when your rev light comes on .

Hello 860 and welcome to our forum -

You got the Special Edition also known as the Limited Edition.

The top speed is limited because there aren't any speed limits in Utah over 80 mph.

Besides, with the rpm below 3,000 you save gasoline and since your car is in the "torque dip", you won't be tempted to race mustangs.



Seriously, take it back to the dealer, they can fix it.

Meanwhile, I suggest you just drive in automatic mode.

...and somehow ya think that limits your revs..? you said limiter, not light..

Thanks for the responses and the help. As I said I am taking it to the dealer, the reason i asked is because the dealership responded with: "are you sure manual mode is supposed to work in the cold?" I responded that considering its been cold here since I got the car and when I first got it worked fine I would say yes. If the dealer is this ignorant about my car I'm a little worried about their ability to properly diagnosis and fix my car..... I thought maybe someone on here had possibly had a similar problem and it if it was an easy fix I could do it myself.

If a dealer every states somthing that stupid to you again, remind them they are the dealer and they are suppose to have all the answers! They may not know the answer however they have the ability to get it.

I would have had a hay day with that one!

FYI 90% of what the salesman tells you is BS. Make sure you are taking with the service department, the BS percentage will go down bye 1 to 2 percent.

yes that is a pretty stupid response from the dealer but considering it is a service adviser speaking to you, it isn't a surprising remark... Are there other Toyota dealers around you?

the one test I would recommend you try is while you are cruising going 80 in "D", move the lever to "M" and keep downshifting until the car beeps at you. Is the car properly downshifting and rev matching with each lower gear? Admittedly all the other cases where I've read a twin with an automatic transmission refusing to rev happened in both D and M, not exclusively in one drive mode.. Video wouldn't hurt either.

First off, I don't believe you're going to be able to fix this yourself (unless you are a tuner).

As mentioned, you may consider taking your car into a different dealer (if feasible).

If you have to take your car to that dealer, I would suggest that you ask for the service manager and relate what you were told.

860, let's try to at least get a warning light to come on.

Drive the car from cold until it warms up and make sure to reproduce the problem, keep it pegged against its 3000 "limit" for a while. During this drive, use both surface streets and highways.

Park it, then one it's cooled down do it all again.

What we want to do is have two back to back drive cycles with the problem present. Some faults need to be confirmed by the computer in two consecutive cycles before turning on a warning light. Your issue has probably logged as a pending code already, but having a light on in the dash is more ammo at the dealer.
