I was also curious about all the vortex generators on the top side of this wing. I am assuming to help with lift at low speed high AOA for carrier landing/takeoff

Yeah that's my guess too. They went pretty aggressive on those.

I think the docents were worried. There were smoke and sparks coming out of the switch eventually.

What fascinated me was the cam timing arrangements.

Same thing they do on cars, the keep the laminar flow of air from departing the wing which generates force particularly during slower speed operations. It can also increase max take-off weight in some situations.

It doesn't increase landing weight though as that is dependent on the aircraft construction.

That was what my thought was. It just seemed like a crazy amount.

On a plane it's not unusual for them to be added to the full leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. A little more unusual to see them on the trailing edge.
