another 200K vehicle in the stable

Well, our 2004 Chevy Suburban (Z71, 4x4) joined the 200K club today. MomHawk had the honor of driving it when it occurred as she was out for her Spa Day on our Fall beach vacation.

We bought the Suburban in 2012, about two months after we purchased the FRS. It replaced our Chevy Astro with 280,000 miles a few months after it decided to eat it's motor bearings as I was returning from the airport after the Easter "First 86" Long Beach trip sponsored by Scion (there' plenty of threads on it if you aren't familar)

It is a high spec Z71 that originally cost $50K in 2004. We purchased it 8 years later with about 85K miles for under $12,000. It was a trade-in at the Honda dealership where my father-in-law worked, and is the last car we purchased through him as he had to medically retire a couple of months afterwards.

It's been good to us, so here's to another 50K to 100K miles!

Getting close to decision time...

The Tentative Production Week (TPW) for my 2024 AWD Cadillac LYRIQ is this week (11/13/2023)

Assuming it's built this week or next and ships relatively quickly, all are big assumptions right now, I may receive it in January. Heck, I'm only 4 or 5 hours from the plant, but they won't let you go pick it up.

Anyway, my intention had been to keep the FR-S. I'm beginning to rethink that. My original plan was to gift it to one of my sons that had cars not quite as reliable as my FR-S has been, but they have both purchased vehicles in the last 6 months.

Unfortunately, I don't have anyplace to park it that wouldn't require a cover for it as it would be under trees. If there is a cover on it, I'm very unlikely to drive it on the spur of the moment on a weekend, and the worse thing you can do to a car besides driving it, is not driving it. Well, unless you have a personal mechanic to look over it.

Since I'm paying cash for the LYRIQ I'm also looking at the FRS representing about $5,000 between trade-in value and tax reduction, not to mention insurance costs.

Still, I hate to let it go. Decisions, decisions....

Thoughts?

You do you.
Also light aircraft and motos, so there's that.
Won't be able to stow the Lyric behind the co-pilot seat like you could with the F-RS.
Maybe an electric bike too.

Don't think they'll kick you off the site for eating crackers in bed, so stick around.

Hah, all true.

I'll definitely stick around, it's too much of a habit to check the site now.

If you can somehow swing a deal worth more than it's resale, go with it. It has served you well. It's not like you're buying a nissan leaf lol

Thanks @Lantanafrs2 and @bcj. Good advice and pretty much what I was thinking. By the way, my new car's birthday was today! (11/15) It rolled off the assembly line today.

Now, if it was going to be used for that purpose, I'd be doing it myself!

So how do the Lemon Racing rules account for a car you already own? Is it resale value?

Sell it to your wife and buy it back. I'll get to studying the rules.

"4.1.1 Lame-Ass Rationalizations: Cars that “should be” worth $500 don’t count; cars that “were worth $500” before you spent another $2000 to fix them don’t count; cars you’ve owned for 20 years and spent more than $500 on during that time don’t count; “it would have been worth $500 if it didn’t already have a cage” doesn’t count. Five hundred dollars means five hundred frickin’ dollars!

4.4 BS Factor: To prevent cheating, all cars will be inspected by a panel appointed by the Organizers. At that time, all teams will be given an opportunity to describe the car’s purchase and prep. If the panel believes the limit set out in Rule 4.1 has been exceeded, it will assign a Bullshit Factor (BSF) equal to one BSF per $10 above the limit. The entry will be docked one lap for each BSF assigned. (Ten dollars = one BSF = one lap.) Entrants are very, very, exceedingly strongly encouraged to bring pre-race-prep photographs, verifiable receipts, notarized testimonials, plus any and all other supporting evidence to Tech/BS Inspection. Or at least make up plausible-sounding stories in advance.

4.4.1 Appeal of BSF Panel Decisions. Get real. There’s no appealing this decision. You’re boned.

"WHAT IF I SPENT MORE THAN $500?
If our judges decide you spent over the $500 limit, they can assign negative laps to your standings. Your cheaty-ass Spec Miata will still start the race when the green drops–it just may be working Lap -629."
