The article says "Toyota" but the meat of the article says "dealership". Did Toyota itself deny the warranty?

It is a pretty click-baity title for how much information is missing. What I'm getting from this article is the extra sealant creating a blockage resulting in oil starvation.

What I'm also (not) reading is how much this guy beat on his car prior to the engine detonating

You could just ask @Aon. It's his car.

Yes.
"FTS and Toyota Corporate had already determined was not warrantable"

I'll resume the thought process of "the customer is always right."

I assume there's a database of VINs with these known-issues, further more to help gauge when we are out of the "early adopter" phase.

So in joint-venture warranties like Subaru-Toyota, is it possible for Toyota Corporate to deny the warranty of the engine, but Subaru Corporate to approve the claim?

The issue with much of the article is that they have relied on social media and this very forum for most of their info.
The sealant is most certainly some part of the issue but all of the discussions here are speculation or maybe theory at best. There is just to little data to make any sort of firm diagnosis.

No we do not have the full story since we have only heard the complainants version of events but at the same time the car is marketed and promoted as a track ready vehicle so should be able to take at least some beating. I do not see how any version of the story should place blame on the owner.

As usual the story will get embellished, altered and sensationalized as each of the different sites play the Telephone Game with it. Soon what is fact vs opinion will be totally lost.

No. Warranties are held by each for their model. Even though technically a Subaru issue Toyota sold the car and should be responsible for the warranty work. They of course could then go after Subaru as the "supplier" for reimbursement.
Same as any other defective parts on the car really. If the tires were no good Toyota would replace for the customer and then go after Michelin. If the alternator failed they would replace and go after whoever made it. The engine is no different than any other part made by a different company.

Edit: in rereading I may have misunderstood the question. Yes Subaru could approve and Toyota deny as different companies. The rest of what I said applies if you tried to go to Subaru to fix your Toyota!

Surprising the attention this is getting now. The RTV in the oil pan has been a thing since 2012. But hey, 10 years late is better than never I suppose.

When I built a new engine for the race car I was appalled at the use of RTV during original manufacturer assembly. Sure, I'm spoiled by having a history with Honda engines and their wonderful use of molded rubber gaskets, but even with RTV being your solution for sealing - the use of it should embarrass anyone involved with Subaru's quality control and production line. But.. here we are.

I do recall reading in the S2K forums about oil starvation, from loading up on a turn, then banking hard the other way, so the oil sloshes upwards, away from the oil pickup or even oil getting up into places it wouldn't normally go.

I wonder how much starvation is needed to blow a modern motor..... but if it's under excess heat.... need more variables and known vectors... math....

Thanks. I wasn't reading "field tech" as a Toyota Corporate tech. My bad.

Yes there are many ways that a car can get starved for oil. It does not help one little bit when it isn't getting the proper flow right from the start though.
So far the ones that have been reported are tracked but have little doubt this issue will start to pop up on street cars as soon as they get a few more miles on them.
Same thing happened back with the 2013 cars but it just took a little longer for the pattern to appear.
