They did and it drew a lot of unwanted attention!

Since I daily drive my 425 HP, 400ft/lbs of torque BMW M4 that lets me go 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. I can finally over take minivans.

If depreciation were horsepower youd probably overtake a McLaren

Lol I still don't get this saying, it's like people love to admit they don't know how to drive a manual.

Some of the other choices are over 50k:Corvette (mid engine is cool but a bit pricey for a future money pit), Supra (just a rebadged BMW), Lexus ES/RC/LC (barely under 50k if you don't want bells and whistles). BMW 2/4//8/Z4 (lease them/don't buy them).

This sucks.
Just about everything needs to be practical or 'hardy' in the affordable bracket of cars. So it's not a surprise that many automakers are ditching the sporty less practical vehicles, or just simply making them unobtainable for the masses.

There is one automaker trying to capture the hearts of young enthusiasts though...

Things are not as stable on the industry as they appear.
Having spent my 35+ year career in biotechnology, and a good chunk of that in infectious diseases, I completely agree with you. It's human nature to want everything to 'go back to normal', and for things to be as they were before the pandemic. The behavior of so many people during the pandemic has shown impatience, selfishness, shortsightedness, ignorance, and outright delusion. The coronavirus doesn't care about any of that. The virus doesn't care about politics, or personal beliefs, or how frustrated someone is with restrictions. Contagion will continue as long as people let it. One look at the data in the U.S. right now shows how well things are going here.

I think many people grossly underestimate the full economic ramifications of the virus. The unfortunate reality is that it's far from over, and won't be 'over' for some time. Years. When that reality becomes unavoidable, the economic consequences will begin in earnest. We've barely begun to feel them so far.

Sports cars are pretty close to the bottom of priorities in a recession. The boom market in some toys right now (RVs, boats, etc.) isn't sustainable. Things will likely be very different this time next year, and it may not be a kind economic environment to develop or launch a new sports car.

Well to be honest an 86 needs a pretty aggressive launch to get to its rated 6.5 or so seconds 0-60 times.

A minivan does it in like 7.5-8 seconds, and its just mash the gas and go.
The euro market ratings for the 86 0-60 are a whole second slower (0-100 in 7.6 seconds) Since 0-60mph is equal to 0-96 km/h I highly doubt it takes a whole second to cover that missing 4km/h

Its just a running gag at this point about how an 86 is just too damn slow, whereas inversely minivans are now stupidly fast for how big and heavy they are. (and neither are considered fast by todays metric....)

The euro specs is for 0-62mph and you need a whole second, because you have to change to 3rd gear.

Don’t the US spec cars also take 3 shifts to 60?

Also, USA testers tend to use rollout for 0-60mph where the rest of the world typically don’t, so 0-100kmh is usually timed from a dead stop. That is worth a couple of tenths right there.

Plenty of cars tune the transmission to avoid shifting to third for the 60 MPH or 100 KM/h sprint (sometimes with a facelift or between generations, suddenly doing the 0-60 time a second faster just thanks to that). I love it that the second gear can barely reach 60 in the 2017+ Twins, makes reaping it much more approachable on public roads. I think the Twins are very rare in making the gearing shorter in the facelift and adding a shift for the 100 KM/h sprint (the 4.1 final drive should barely touch 100 KM/h at redline in second gear, same as the 4.3 final drive barely touches 60 MPH for the same).

Zero to 60 is meaningless with these cars. Big jump from 1st to 2nd, hard to launch consistently etc.

A gear shift doesn't cost a whole second. Some momentum lost but not a whole second
