OK I guess. Just doesn't really make sense to me, but I'm not claiming to be an expert. The SF-R was slated to have what, 130hp? Toyota can't manage to engineer a 130 hp engine themselves without losing money? If they can't take some economy engine from another model and modify it slightly to be mounted longitudinally then why can't they mid-mount a transverse engine that they already have and make a new MR2?
Again, obviously I don't understand modern automaking, and I'm not claiming to. I don't get why Mazda can have the MX-5 powered by a Mazda developed engine? It doesn't cost $80k and I feel like Mazda has less resources than Toyota. The Z has a Nissan produced engine. It doesn't cost $80k. And honestly, I don't care to have it explained to me. If it can't be done, I guess that's just how it is. Me understanding it won't change it, and it won't change that I think it's stupid. Maybe I should just be looking for an old MR2 or 80's Celica or something and enjoy Toyota's glory days.

This is about the closest thing you could get to what the S-FR would have been:

Yeah, I know there's a Fiat version. But it's still a Mazda developed engine in the Mazda MX-5.
If there were a Subaru version of the Toyota 86 with a Toyota engine...I'd care a lot less about the shared platform thing. I just prefer a Toyota engine. I've preferred a Toyota engine since it was announced. And I'm just extra annoyed about it right now because of the stupid recall situation. I also get that refining existing models is cheaper than starting from scratch. From what understood the SF-R was nearly production ready. So they did plenty of work already. I don't know if it was ever substantiated, but I believe I remember reading that it was possibly going to use a modified but existing Toyota engine. But I need to leave work, so I'm gonna stop typing now. LOL.

Didnt Toyota say around Supra time debut they wouldn't bother with a sub 86 anymore? Reasoning if you want a cheaper 86 alternative plenty of used ones are available. The 3rd brother would be a tier above the current 86 and under the new Supra.

They really have never said anything on any official level about any tiered level of cars. A couple of company representative have said they would "like" to see three levels and the so called press ran with those comments and made loads of crap up.

I often wonder what their motivation is to have a 3 sports car lineup. I'm guessing it has to to with attracting younger buyers who will then stick with the brand. They know what they're doing and i could be WAY off base. |

I think that they just like the idea of sports cars. As silly as that sounds it really could be as simple as that.
