TOB life expectancy
2013 GT86 here with 68k miles
I recently started getting the TOB sound, it is quite subtle but it you listen closely you can hear it, especially from the outside. My question is how long does it take to get really bad? I don't want to replace it now as I'm thinking about changing out the clutch pack altogether. I also plan a light track day in a month, should I be worried my TOB is gonna give? |

Mine lasted about 59k miles. It started making a loud rattling/screeching noise. I bought the updated version from Toyota. That was about 33k miles ago.

There is no specific mileage at which it goes. Its a wear item and whenever it goes then the best approach is to get the fork and pivot changed to better ones. Verus makes forged one and Cusco makes a reinforced one. It seems that the flex in the stock fork maybe the culprit. While you have gearbox down its better to get it all done at one go, since you will be tracking too. Hope this helps. PS: You guys have a track? Back in the days I didn't see a track there. That was ages ago, mind you. |

I just don't want to bother changing it know considering it's a pain to drop the gearbox and I wanna get a few more miles out of the clutch. Yeah we actually have two tracks, Motorpark in Adâncata and Transilvania Motor Ring. |

Once you start getting the sound then its a question of time till it goes.
You better prepare yourself with the parts instead of waiting for it to die on you. Your clutch is squeaky or you get a high pitched sound at the end of travel when pressing the clutch ? Squeaky all the way of the travel is TOB and at the end is that pivot that's dry. But it does get worn too. |

Are ALL clutch forks and pivots bad or is it worth getting the upgraded OEM ones, along with the TOB? |

Mine went full stuck pig squeal at 95k miles. I agree with Thefalls, start buyin up your parts now in prep.
I'd say you're good until it reallllly goes. Then just replace everything while you're in there. TOB, fork, pivot ball, clutch kit, flywheel, flywheel studs and then have the peace of mind. But the sound of a worn TOB is unmistakable. It would be embarrassing to drive, IMO. EDIT, do yourself a favor and don't put a factory TOB fork in there - VERUS makes a relatively cheap and very strong one that will outlast your car.

Don't wait.
As soon as it starts change it. There is no predicting how long it will last. I waited too long and instead of a $50 bearing I paid for a $1200 clutch repair.

Daaaaang, I feel like I could hear that from here. How loud was the noise? And how long did you ride it out?

I was planning on taking it in for oil change and service and figured I could wait it out. Then it stopped making noise only had one more week to wait. Then is started to squeal like an stuck pig. OK couple more days. Then it went BOOM and the car filled with smoke. All in all about two months from first noise to total melt down. I now strongly advise anybody with the light squeal to just get it done.

Here's mine. Started squealing after a 75 mile commute, threw the car in reverse to back in my garage and the sound started - was almost unbearable. Notice how the inner bearing of the TOB is slightly to one side (9 oclockish) - this made the most obnoxious sound. And also here are the remnants in the bottom of the bell housing.

It is definitely going to fail if it's original. May as well change it now on your terms rather than have it fail and be stranded.
I have a QUESTION. Has anyone had a failure on the new replacement TOB yet? And if so, how long did it last? |

Well then I guess I shall drop the gearbox soon, also gives me a chance to inspect the clutch, see what's what.
Do you guys recommend the reinforced fork or a new OEM one? |
