I thought getting rid of the happy face and the tear drops were both clears pluses in anyone's eyes. Do some people prefer the "smiling" shaped grill?

Probably most of the people that have always chosen the BRZ.

Yeah, I've always liked the BRZ grille over the FRS/86. I felt it had a more aggressive look to me in some way, I just liked it. Especially when 17+ was released. The smile doesn't bother me at all if it is done properly, and the 17+ make that very clear. It's just the overall styling that's important, and I'm still having trouble getting used to this new BRZ front bumper. At this point, I feel like if I ever get used to it, it's only because I forced myself to lol.

What bothers me most is how far it protrudes, like it is stretched or something. The nose also dips low, which looks a little odd to me as well. I believe the side vents don't help at all either, as the 86's styling on that is much preferred for the 22.

I guess I'll just have to wait for the face lift on the new BRZ (if it ever comes and is better designed).

I have to agree with most people here that the styling on the front bumper is a bit polarizing but I still like the BRZ design over the GR86 one for staying true to what the First Gen was like design wise. I like what they did on the side vents for the GR86 bumper but maybe we'll see some interesting front bumper designs in the aftermarket. I wouldn't hold out for a Facelift of the BRZ as Suppliers are definitely not wanting to do contracts for 1 year of tooling to then replace everything for the OEM unless they have a major incentive. If the ICE car market is going to be hanging on into 2028-2030, then it might be possible for a Refresh but even then I do not recommend holding onto that idea.

Indeed, I'm certainly not holding my breath to it. Though I can imagine this gen stretching out for a similar period of time as the previous. If it does, I would expect them to give it a similar update. Aftermarket should certainly be a good alternative (HOPEFULLY). All depends if someone can come up with a nice OEM-style clean looking bumper.

We can still dream about it for a bit, right?

Here's a 5-minute photoshop job putting the 2nd gen BRZ grille on a GR86 bumper, and expanding the bottom of the grille vertically to get closer to the 17+ proportions.

I've intentionally kept as much as possible from the GR86 bumper — just to demonstrate what they could do while keeping the cost of the redesign as low as possible.

I'd say "shut up and take my money".

Yeah, I don't understand why they just don't do what you rendered. The actual BRZ bumper proportions are a better awkward, but I'm sure it'll probably translate better in person, but it sorta creates a disconnected bottom line across the car since the front bumper appears higher than the lowest line on the profile of the car.

I've only photoshopped one patent image of a bumper onto another. White spots mean "background".

Here's a version with holes painted black, to make it easier to imagine how it would look on a real car:

Nice work on the concept, that actually doesn't look too bad with the GR86 side vents. I think Subaru wanted to have some aerodynamic variant of a side vent but even agree that the gill design looks more streamlined than what the 2022 BRZ will be.
