I guarantee that the special editions move more units than a power bump would. We are not the main market for these cars. Most 86s are bought by non-carpeople who want a 'sporty' car but don't actually care about performance. A Camry would do but they don't need the rear seats really, and the 86 looks fast and more expensive than it is. A special edition puts the cherry on top for when they go show it off to their other non-carpeople friends. Then they get feedback on 'how it's a nice color' and 'it rides nice for something this sporty'. BMW figured this out too. You can buy an 'M' version of any car now. Badges and looks sell cars, power figures don't. At least not anymore. |

If this were just an appearance package, I could see it as a cynical cash grab. However, since it's finally adding the brembos and good suspension to the 86, as well as the the kouki TRD aero kit that Japan has been able to get since 2017, I see it more as a special edition aimed at people who are REALLY into their eight-sixes, and want what may end up being the modern day version of the AE86 Black Limited, a rare final run version with special parts. The fact that this is only offered as a manual reinforces that it's focused on enthusiasts. I'm still at a loss as to why everyone still thinks it's underpowered. It's literally a modern day AE86, meant to be great at handling and training it's driver to be better, and easily upgradable to be faster if needed, just like the original. Even then, it's still much faster than the AE86 ever was. It's like people forget that JDM tuner cars back in the day were fast not because they were built that way, but because the owners made them faster. Even then, Toyota/Subaru threw enthusiasts a bone and almost doubled the horsepower from the AE86 (112-205), whereas for the new Supra, we're only seeing a gain of 20hp over the USDM twin-turbo (320-340). |

They obviously want WRX/STI power in a $25k car. Basically more for less. 99% are millenial's who want more for less. Yeh i said it!

Why don't they slap a turbo on this and call it a supra?

Then they bought the wrong car if that is what someone wanted from this car. This car is more interactive.

I'd be willing to bet if Toyota/Subaru smoothed out the torque dip and made the engine pull more linearly you would hear less complaints.

Would pay if the money was invested in the drivetrain of this car not more show goodies. Miata is jumping from 155 to 181hp, +26hp because they invested in the engineering of the motor. We got +5 hp from tweaking the intake and exhaust manifold with no research into developing a better motor. 32K for 230hp stock car would be worth 35K for those that want all the stick-ons kits and stripes Just one more final cash grab by toyobaru

People hated the red highlights because depending on what exterior color you got it looked strange. For example a Hot Lava frs with the red inserts looked off to people. Black and red goes well together so I don't think it really bothers people.

Looks fine to me on mine, but it's of course a subjective thing. Some folks seemed to think it was too boy-racer-ish (in a cheap sports car? Le gasp!), but I much prefer the red and black interior over the black and grey thing that they started doing when they finally started using the Toyota name in the U.S. and did the facelift.

I've never complained about the power in this car, but it does bother me that the new Miata is continuing to improve while the 86 treads water.
