It would make sense to do something like this since it does not involve much capital expenditure. A special exterior color and some interior stitching accents, perhaps a new wheel design or color, slap a little price premium on it and generate some buzz for a sports coupe which always need continued exposure after the first year of release to help combat the inevitable sales decline.

Except for situations where the sales are 100% limited by production.
Like it is right now — there are still people who preordered before the start of sales who haven't gotten their cars yet.

These times are unprecedented, but perhaps Toyota is sticking to their old playbook. Either way, we'll likely know if this is happening by summer.

This was my first thought as well, but the GR86 won't have many years under it's belt with the way emissions/electric is going. When's the next time they can do an "anniversary" edition? 15 year anniversary? 10 or 20 makes more sense. The GR86 won't last 10 more years, that's for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if a 10 year anni is a basic package and paint that won't increase production cost, but garner some easy sales to carry the car through it's remaining life cycle.

Maybe they'll just fix all the bugs that are plaguing the 2022 models and make THAT your anniversary gift.
