I was 27 when I got my FRS.....got it after I got engaged and bought a new house. Heard all the same things - not practical, what about kids, doesn't look professional. My now wife was the only one who supported me when I decided to get the FRS.

Flash forward a year and a half - I have a kid on the way. I gave up my FRS for a Focus RS so I could fit all my baby gear, but still have fun while driving. Funny enough, I still hear the same comments - hatchbacks aren't practical, you need a van/SUV, blah blah blah.

Forget what everyone else says - YOU are the one driving the car so go for what you want.

I think you should do the right thing and get rid of your family. You don't need that kind of negativity in life.

I'm joking, ofcourse. I was in the same boat. I'm 25 and I got my FR-S last month. I still get comments from the family sometimes that I didn't do the most practical thing but I simply couldn't bring myself to liking any other car. The more I researched about the FR-S, the more I ended up liking it. So if you really like the car, you should go for it. Your family will get over it eventually.

It's a really nice car.

One of my let peeves are people buying large SUVs/Vans when you have one or two kids. 90% of the time, a sedan hatch or wagon will do the job just fine. But nope, car companies have brainwashed people into thinking they need a tank with AWD for their only child and 3 bags of groceries and occasional 2 inch snowstorm.

This was the battle I fought with the wife for her last 4 cars. She drives about 20 minutes to work and we use the car for the normal chores of life but she insisted on SUVs for the 3 or 4 times a year we would have the grandkids with us for a weekend.
I finally convinced her that a compact hatch was the way to go in the last purchase a month ago. She is overjoyed with the new car and I have broke the unneeded SUV cycle she was trapped in.

Regardless of what car you buy, people will always find something negative to say about the purchase. Oh you bough an SUV? Don't you care about the environment? Oh you bought a prius? You know much of a carbon footprint those have, just being built? Oh you bought a mustang? OK BROSEF DONT RUN ME OVER WIT DEM HORSIES. Oh you bought a honda? Well it ain't a type-r so it ain't a tight car mr fast and furious.

What truly matters is how you feel. Will YOU be content with this purchase? They are not driving the car every day. They are not paying your car payment every month. Personally, every time I get into my manual fr-s I smile. Driving it makes me happy, and I often find myself saying, "this is the perfect car for me." So do you think that's how you will feel? If you get something else, will you sit in traffic every day dreaming about the frs/brz, or will you be glad you purchased something with more doors and seats?

As for professional... I work from home... but when my wife has driven it to work she's been criticized by a few co-workers for letting her husband get away with buying a "$70,000 sports car".
And in terms of more seats... when we finally need 4+ real seats my wife has threatened me with a WRX or STI saying she'll take the BRZ as her DD.
You lucked out!

I only occasionally cop shit about the car and it's power levels, which I don't really care about as I'm not bothered by it and it's just light friendly banter.

For instance, I was at a barbeque about a year ago and a friend was having a light jab about the power and torque of the 86 compared to his Golf R.

I basically replied that although I like his car (And I've driven it a few times) it doesn't appeal to me as much as the 86 as it doesn't give the feeling of involvement that a simple RWD lightweight manual car does. His car is a lot of fun, but in most aspects, it's the computers doing the work. I also threw in that I thought the MKVI Golf R's gear stick had the wide loose throws of a rental van.

Overhearing this another friend of both of ours who is very much interested in cars (Owns two RX4's) interjected and backed me up saying that although he'd rather have the Golf R for a long road trip on the highway, he'd prefer the 86 for spirited twisty roads.

If nothing else, this thread readily identifies the real issue here: our egos. We (people in general) foolishly equate a car with the worth of the driver.

One of the most brilliant marketing moves ever, having created enormous wealth through the 20th century, and which is now being (sadly ?) subverted by millennial indifference to owning cars in general.

I fortunately have the privilege to finish school with zero debt. Other guys/gals my age aren't so lucky. I'm sure many millennials wouldn't be indifferent to buying cars (or even houses) if they didn't have a stupid amount of debt.

They prefer to just waste more and be car less in cities
