Wiring harnesses might be the only thing that will probably different connectors/pairings for the digital display but let's see when the car is manufactured.

The headunit does protrude out a bit but I don't mind for it's placement. It contrasts the angle of the plastic molding for the glovebox and the steering column but it is oriented towards the driver for hopefully better viewing angle. I wonder how the Audio Quality will be compared to the First Gen.

Ah, you are correct in that department for how difficult to swap the Display. The only way to modify it would be to use Subaru's tech to pull Odometer data from the Controller connected to the Display. I would reckon that PCB assembly/set of chips will be the biggest cost for integration into a Custom display.

At that cost, might as well just run custom scripts/programs compatible for that display to get additional information or keep certain meters like the G-Meter active while driving. I like the Boxer design for the display but am a bit off about the Track Mode Ramp design for the Tachometer. Maybe a curved Tach display to emulate the S2000's display would be more useful for Rev ranges but maybe I just need to get used to it.

The odometer settings on a swap aren't that complicated in my experience. I replaced the instrument cluster in my 2004 Suburban earlier this year when chasing an electrical problem. I bought a Dorman refurbished one through Summit Auto. They required the VIN, a photo and self-certification of the mileage which they programmed into the new cluster as a start.

Are the ones in the 86 more complicated than that?

Anything analog or for a typical instrument cluster has been straightforward to replace the panel and find the IC for the Odometer data. To convert an analog to digital display, the wiring harness just needs to have compatible connectors. I like how Ford had compatibility with their SYNC digital displays for the 2015-2018 Mustang so it may be possible with the Second Gen.

Biggest thing is what firmware/software on the instrument cluster would be compatible. For example, the E99 ECU's for the Corvette definitely have more restricting scripts for what data can be processed or acquired on CANBus. It's possible to learn the programming and code for it, but you got to work with what the OEM programmed with the lC for logic.
