If you have a FI car regarding the rear end.

Just a heads up check your rear diff fluid.

While I agree it shouldn't be normal, I've seen it on numerous cars...including mine and my brother's car.

Besides our cars seeing this, here are a few more pictures/posts with the same issue.

...but I do agree, it shouldn't be considered "normal". I personally don't feel good about mine having shavings in it...but at least I'm not the only one seeing this.

Is Toyota replacing it under warranty, even though you have a turbo installed? Just curious. I realize it happened before the turbo kit was installed, just wondering if Toyota is giving you a hard time.

Thanks

when i replaced my diff fluid after a couple thousand miles (some of which were turbocharged, though i was just babying it around at the time on a rough tune) i saw the exact same thing. the sky isn't falling.

It's concerning when you first see it, but that's normal to see that on the drain plug from break-in. But if the rear is whining you may have some other problem back there.

If you're giving the diff a hard time, you have a few choices
Change fluid more often
Increase oil capacity
Install diff oil cooler

I changed my diff oil when I put the 2 way in. I plan on changing the diff oil every 10,000kms. Preventative maintainence

Like diss7 said, changing the fluid change frequency is probably your best bet to find out if the whine goes away. A little whine is okay btw, but a very loud whine is not.

We're on a pretty regular schedule on changing both our cars. Just like changing oil in the motor, the trans and read end need some love too.

I'm unsure how these diffs are when first manufactured, but most of the ring and pinions I've seen that are brand new are rough enough to file your fingernails on. It takes quite a long time for that to fully wear in and become polished and smooth...

OP is freaking out and inevitably others who see normal shavings on their drain plugs when changing fluids are going to assume their diff grenaded too.

Tons of shavings on mine when I changed it at 10k... I think it's pretty well established here that the rear end is going to have a lot of shavings your first few changes... disregard the service manual, and change the fluid more frequently, at least in the early days. Toyota/subaru must have been conscious of this, as they put in a magnetic plug, they knew there were going to be a bunch of shavings to collect.

The whining is another issue. You should see if it persists after the fluid change.
