dp1 track car mods that pass NY inspection - street legal?
Looking at having the following installed - full cage, single (driver side) race seat, gutted interior, 6-point harness and will leave OEM steering wheel and 3-point harness in if necessary. One CEL/code for removed cat. Single CEL is allowed by NYS to pass inspection. Will I have trouble passing NY inspection with other mods?
I understand the dangers of driving with these modifications and without HANS/Helmet. Trailing car is not an option. Rarely driving this car on street, primarily to-from tracks. Please advise, thank you Last edited by dp1; 10-02-2016 at 01:48 PM. |

I am looking at:
- Autopowerindustries roll bar http://www.autopowerindustries.com/R...Scion-FRS-2012- "Race Roll Bar With Options" part# 60783, so I can remove the bars to transport spare wheels and other things to/from track. - Sparco Ergo Large http://www.sparcousa.com/product/ergo - Schroth 6-point harness https://www.schrothracing.com/products/profi-ii or https://www.schrothracing.com/products/clubman - VAC Motorsports race seat installation kit https://store.vacmotorsports.com/rac...frs-p3647.aspx |

Any CEL code will automatically fail inspection in NY.

Thanks, I am asking because the only meaningful guidance I found online is: "https://dmv.ny.gov/brochure/what-do-...cars-not-ready" Late last year I had one code and did not fail inspection. Maybe that counted as "monitor not ready". |

"Monitor Not Ready" basically means this; Your ECU runs tests on the car at certain times. There's 4 or 5 tests it runs for a pass/fail. If the test hasn't run yet you'll get a "not ready" These are your "monitors". When the NYS Inspection computer is plugged in, it's not doing active diagnostics...it's simply looking to see if all the monitors have run and passed. You are allowed one monitor to be "not ready" and if that not ready monitor happens to coincide with the code you had at the time then you got lucky and passed. The problem with a cat code (P0420) is that the catalyst monitor will almost always complete it's tests before the Evap system (because the evap system typically takes two warm/cool cycles). If the car is tuned, can't you tune out the P0420 code?

I think that the FNG Ecutek tune from Delicious already removes CEL and the tech told me that I should pass with my set up the next time I come for inspection (if nothing else changes), so I should be fine with the existing code/monitor. Much appreciate your response. My roll bar will not be the type that requires use of helmet, so that should be fine also. I won't use 6pt harness on street, only 3pt seat belt. Car has catback so not very loud. Interested if anyone in NY had issues with authorities about gutted interior and (smaller) roll bar and race seat. I would still like to take the car out at times for a joy ride but safety on track takes priority. Hope this setup allows for both. |

Why won't you get your car inspected before you do all of the above?

Nice try, I would like to pass inspection for years to come I think that I'll be ok since I'm leaving standard safety equipment in place, just adding things that make me safer on track and should not make me less safe on the street...just wanted to check with others. Probably very few people go this far on a car that's not raced and trailered to/from track... |

I'm not sure the addition of a roll bar in a street car, while not the best idea, would fail inspection...I don't even think there's a provision in the rules for that lol!
Keep the 3-point belt because I'm sure that needs to be there for inspection. Gutted interior should pass also as long as all seatbelts are there (stupid I know but just bolt them in place to pass).

Thank you, was going to leave 3pt seat belt as is since I wouldn't use 6pt harness without helmet and Hans. |

Just remember a roll bar will likely increase risk of injury/death on the street from an accident from body parts including heads hitting the bar. It might be an acceptable risk and the placement of the bar has much to do with that risk.
For example if you look at most bars in a tracked/street 911 the bar is behind the front seats and basically eliminates the back seats. Probably low risk of any injury to two front passengers. A full cage would of course have a higher risk. |

Absolutely agree - bad ideas: - added metal in the range of (violent/accident) motion of the head and without the helmet - race harnesses without helmet and Hans (snapped neck) - seats that don't give way when everything else crumbles The roll bar I ordered is behind the driver and the two removable bars will be off when car is driven on the street. My car goes to/from track and on rare joyrides. |
