Did your car insurance go up this year?

I cannot believe how much they raised my car insurance for the 2021-2022 year. I just got my renewal quote and it is up almost 25%! From $1563.52 to $1939.52.

For context I am in the Bay Area, California, age 28 and have had no claims in the past year. I am with AAA. Is this a normal increase due to the pandemic and with how things are going in the economy?

I would love to hear from everyone else if they also have significant increased premiums.

Hmm mine has gone down. There was also a discounted month due to low mileage the past 18 months or something

Approx same age range, same region (SJ), and State Farm.

No accidents or other incidents. I'm on a family account thingy (basically just for a slight discount but not much) and anyone in my family who gets a bad record would affect me. But they've all driven fine.

@spike021 Good to know it's not the norm for such a big increase this year.

True. As nice as it is, I don't love SF. They weren't great when someone hit and ran from my parked car a couple years ago.

Could be due to the car values skyrocketing recently. Higher value cars mean higher value insurance payouts, and thus higher premiums.

AAA is great but ya........... I would go talk to your triple A insurance agent & see what they can do.

i just switch to root insurance, back to 80 bucks a month for me.

*they only offer upto 3 times road assistance/basic 5 mile towing in 6 month period, so I still got AAA membership on the side for roadside assitance.......so.........it's like 88 a month.

that's where i speculate the change is.

single people are more dangerous, jumping canyons, and donuts in the middle of the highway all the time sure don't help either. married people have something to live for, and always do nothing but boring stuff like wine tastings and brunch.

but why don't you call them, and ask where the rate increase came from? i always do... many times, they'll use it as an opportunity to discuss current coverage vs. needed coverage, and depending on a number of factors, can sometimes reduce the overall cost by shuffling some things around, or reducing excessive coverage in certain areas.

Mine has gone up because I recently added my father and a new car. Prior to that I was going down every 6 months renewal. It could be like others have pointed out, price increase on used vehicles. But it also depends on location. I used to live in a city with a lot of crime and car accidents and my insurance was about 140 a month with Geico. I moved to a more secluded part of the state and as soon as I notified my insurance about my new address my insurance went down to $110/month.

@weederr33 May I ask if it went up only marginally or by a larger percentage like mine?

I do the 6mo upfront with Progressive and it went up a couple hundred for me. When I called, they insisted it was because of it being a 'high risk' vehicle. This despite me being 32 and not having any speeding tickets or wrecks (that I caused at least).

You said the reason

My insurance went up from 2018 to 2020 due to me getting hit twice while having the car parked & different cars too!

Your risk factor simply went up despite the fact it's not your fault.
