Given the driving I do and the skills I have (or lack thereof), I actually enjoyed the stock Miatas more than the ones built for racing. The S2000 was a blast to drive. My stock '13 FRS doesn't have that last 5% "I'm driving a PURE sports car" feel, maybe, but it's still a LOT of fun and certainly feels like a sports car in handling and layout.

And... I drive it all year round in the snow/salt belt of Syracuse.
And.. I use it for gigging, loading a full 88-key heavy keyboard, an SWR Workingman 12 amp, a smaller amp, crate with cords, throne, keyboard stand, music stand, mic stands, blah blah blah in it.
And.. my wife and I tent camp in it, loading a fairly large tent, cooler, stove, and enough other gear to have a great time in the OBX for a week or two.
And ... I take my wife and my Kelpie to local establishments for fun, foam, and frolic frequently in it.

None of those things are possible with a miata or S2000 (well, with snows, winter driving would work, although parking outside in the snow belt with a soft top to clear off would concern me.. but none of the hauling stuff).

And.. when I'm not doing any of that... it's still a fun, cheap, manual, RWD sports car. It's that WHEN I'm doing all of that.

Nothing else can do all of that. I admit I was a little disappointed when my 325i finally got eaten by salt, and I couldn't another one that wasn't ridiculously priced (was looking for an E36 specifically). "Settled" for the FRS, even though I'd never heard of it, because it popped up when I was searching specifically for RWD/manual. Enjoyed the test drive and figured it'd do, but wasn't as hooked then as I am now, 70K miles and six years later.

I will buy another one when this one finally succumbs to our winters. It'll be a while.
So now I know you are a jazz keyboardist. I used to work with Oscar Peterson's daughter-in-law.

I'm an amateur drummer but only on practice pads for the past 30 or so years. Took swing lessons when I had my last kit so I can definitely appreciate the genre, whether it's bebop or any other type. I actually had Glen Miller music blasting through the house for a couple of hours yesterday. Gotta love it! But I gotta love more abstract artists like Miles Davis too. Guys like that appear once in a century.

Chic Corea RIP

Honestly I think all sports cars are trying to be ok at commuting. Look at all the adaptive shocks and various settings. This enables the car to be quiet and soft for cruising, loud and stiffer for the track and everything in between. But these are on more expensive cars. Someday the tech might get down to the twin level.

I use my BRZ as a DD and it is the most fun. More than my 04 WRX.

Debating miata vs a twin is mostly subjective and which one you like more.

You could spring for a set of Koni FSDs (frequency selective dampers).

Well, the footer on his every message has his MPG and "What fits in your 86?", but his profile picture is in a helmet.
I'm confused!

Which to buy? Subjective.
Which you prefer? Subjective.
Which is a better sports car? Not subjective.
Which is a better commuter? Not subjective.

I toyed with the idea of getting the next gen. Like, reaaaaally thought about it (currently chasing down a P0456 code) and came to a decision: I am sticking with my '13. Here's why.

It's paid off.
All mods I have done are reversible.
I have only 41k miles.
Valve recall was done at 36k and all is good.
Body is in great shape. No accidents but a few scratches and door dings.
Never got condensation in the tail lights.

If I was in a better financial situation, I would keep my 1st gen and buy the 2nd gen. I cant bring myself to trade in my '13 for a '22. I have too much love for her

See, I think in your case, it would be foolish to buy the new car. Since you can tune it and not worry about the warranty, the biggest benefit of the new car will be lost (probably). I am certain that a ZC6/ZN6 could be made to handle and feel similar if not better than a ZD8.

Pretty much all of those are financial concerns, as are most of the ones brought up in this thread in the half-dozen pages since I posted.

If money is truly no issue, as stated in the first line in the first post by the OP for this thread, basically no reason to stick with the first gen outside of really hating interior/exterior design changes (or lack of special colors like Hakone Ed. Green) or the digital dash or a commitment to factory-optioned Brembos or other little stuff like that.

Agreed.

Hell even the ZC6 brembos will bolt up to the ZD8 if you want to spend 4k on them.

I think it is almost impossible to separate money out of this, or any purchase decision.

So removing money, there's no reason to stay with the original except for a number of different reasons. Got it.

Money is one of the most important factors. If money was no object, I wouldn't even consider sticking with a twin

They dont need it (adaptive suspension).

Unlike cars that use that technology, the twins are neither heavy nor with a high centre of gravity.

They are able to achieve both enjoyable and comfortable street and track feel just because of the natural nature of them. The boxer FR layout is legendary as a daily driving sports car. We are very lucky.
